Savannah State Outdoor Track & Field Concludes Regular Season

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Savannah State men’s and women’s track and field teams closed out the 2014 outdoor season at the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend.

The Tigers competed in only a few events in their final meet in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Regional Preliminary Championship on May 29.

One of the last of the SSU teams looking to qualify for the NCAA Regionals was the relay team of Kenshard Hamilton, Justin Leggett, Cameron Hall and Antwuan Poole. The Tigers ran a 40.83 in the 4x100 meter relay for a third place finish at Georgia Tech.

In the 100m dash, Hamilton finished 18th with a time of 10.60. Lemaar Shakir ran a 52.93 in the 400m hurdles for a 13th place finish.

For the Lady Tigers, Asia Stinson qualified in the preliminaries with a time of 11.68. She ran an 11.92 to finish 7th in the final race. Stinson set the school record for the event (11.60) in this year’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championship.

The top 48 student-athletes in the individual competitions and the top 24 relay teams will be accepted into the NCAA Regionals (divided by east and west sites). The final qualification list will be announced on Thursday, May 22, 2014.

The Savannah State track and field program has qualified members for the NCAA Regionals every year since the school elevated to NCAA Division I (2002-03).

CSU enjoys good performances at ECAC/IC4A Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. – Christina Epps soared to victory in the triple jump at the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Princeton University’s Weaver Stadium track by leaping a season best 43 feet, .50 inches (13.12 meters) Sunday afternoon.

The ECAC championship is a perfect complement to the ECAC indoor triple jump crown she won as well as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) indoor and outdoor triple jump championships she captured.

Sophomore standout Deandra Daniel was second in the high jump with a clearance of 5-11.50 (1.82 meters). The four-time MEAC high-jump champion still is tied for the seventh best effort in the event heading into the NCAA East Regionals. Senior Jennifer Mitchell finished eighth in the triple jump with an effort of 39-10.75 (12.16 meters).

Together, the terrific trio of CSU women helped them score 19 points in the team standings, which was 16th overall out of 57 schools that scored at least one point.

On the men’s side, Rosen Daniel, Donell Taylor and Shane Green all finished among the top four in their respective events. Inspired by those individual efforts, the Eagles’ 4 x 400-meter relay team also had their fastest performance of the season in finishing fourth in their event. Overall, the CSU men scored 26 points to finish in 11th place in the team standings.

Daniel finished second in the 400-meter run in a time of 46.53 seconds. He ran a season-best 46.38 in Saturday’s preliminary race, it was an effort that bumped Daniel into the top 20 of the event as he has the 19th-best performance overall in the NCAA East Region. That time was the second fastest in school history in the 400-meter dash. The school record in the event is 46.21 seconds held by Karanja Alexander, who set the mark in 2002. Taylor was fourth in the 400 as he crossed the finish line in 47.09 seconds. Taylor had a season-best performance in Saturday’s preliminary round of 47.03.

Meanwhile, Green was also fourth in his signature event, the triple jump as he leaped 48 feet, 11.50 inches. The Eagles’ 4 x 400-meter relay team of Michael James, Kester Chase, Daniel and Taylor finished their race in 3 minutes, 8.96 seconds. In the 4 x 1, the Eagles finished eighth overall (41.73 seconds).

The official list of qualifiers for the NCAA East Regional will be released later this week on the NCAA website. The Regionals will be held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville from Thursday, May 29 through Saturday, May 31.

Morgan State's Mealer, McCammon Place In Top Five At ECAC Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Morgan State women’s track and field team concluded the final day of the 31st annual Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Sunday in a six-way tie for 32nd-place with nine points. The championship was held at William Weaver Track & Field Stadium on the campus of Princeton University.

The Lady Bears would finish tied with Temple, Manhattan, Villanova, UMBC and St. John’s.

Connecticut would score 85 points to capture its second straight and fifth overall ECAC outdoor title, while Harvard placed second with 46 points and fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Hampton, finished third with 40 points.

Ranita Mealer and Jenea McCammon accounted for all nine of the Lady Bears’ points, as both athletes finished in the top five of their respective events.

Mealer placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 48-03.50, while McCammon placed fifth in Sunday’s finals of the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.37.

McCammon joined teammates Teyanna Green, Charisma Green and Shenel Crooke on the 4X100 meter relay team, which finished 10th during the preliminary rounds on Saturday with a time of 47.01.

Jenelle Ovid had a jump of 5-06.00 in the high jump to finish tied for 13th overall.

Lady Pirates third, Pirates tied for ninth in IC4A/ECAC Outdoors

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Hampton University women’s track & field team finished third, and the men’s track & field team came in tied for ninth, in the ECAC and IC4A Outdoor Championships this past Friday, Saturday, and Sunday hosted by Princeton University.

The Lady Pirates wound up with 40 points in the ECAC standings, coming in six points behind second-place Harvard. Connecticut won the ECAC team title with 85 points.

Senior Breana Norman won the 100-meter hurdles after running a season-best 13.44 in the final, and she was on the 4x100-meter relay squad – along with senior Teiara Denmark, sophomore Tanisha Greene, and junior Le’Quisha Parker – that came in second with a 45.38.

Denmark also came in second in the long jump with a mark of 6.08 meters (19 feet, 11.5 inches).

Parker also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team, where she, along with senior Malekah Holland, senior Emmy Fraenk, and sophomore Ce’aira Brown, finished second with a 3:36.45.

Senior Cydney Robinson ran a 2:08.04 to come in third in the 800-meter run.

The Pirates tallied 27 points to tie with Maryland Baltimore County for ninth in the IC4A standings. Pitt won the IC4A team title with 51 points.

Senior Stefano Nardini won the javelin throw after tossing the implement 70.39 meters (230 feet, 11 inches), and senior Je’Von Hutchison ran a season-best 46.51 to take the 800-meter run title.

Hutchison also anchored the Pirates’ 4x400-meter relay team that finished third. Freshman Rayon Black, junior Chidi Okezie, junior Edose Ibadin, and Hutchison ran a 3:08.73.

The NCAA East Preliminary will be held in Jacksonville, Fla. May 29-31.

UMES earns strong finishes at IC4A/ECAC Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. - The IC4A/ECAC Championships in New Jersey this past weekend featured 57 schools from up and down the east coast competing to qualify or improve positions for upcoming tournaments, as well as a chance to earn wins in a postseason tournament.

Out of all those schools, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) track team finished strongly, with the men earning a 14th place finish and the women earning a 15th place finish. The men accrued 22 points while the women earned 20.

The men's team was led by senior Ramone Waite, who finished fifth in the 100 meter finals with a time of 10.67 seconds and sixth in the 200 meter finals with a time of 21.43 seconds.

Waite had an even stronger finishes in the 100m semifinals with a second place time of 10.53 seconds and a sixth place semifinal time in the 200 meters at 21.33 seconds.

Fellow seniors Aaron Chatmon took fifth in the 400 meter dash with his second best finish of the season at 47.13 seconds, and Javon Spencer finished 10th in the 200 meter finals with a time of 21.73 seconds.

In the men's relays, the team of Rico Taylor, Spencer, Chatmon, and Waite finished fourth in the 4x100 race with a time of 40.97 seconds. Spencer, Waite and Chatmon, along with freshman Orwell Maylor took seventh in the 4x400 relay, posting a time of 3:16.06.

Junior Dillon Simon led the men's field team with his fifth place, 53.18 meter performance in the discus and an 11th place finish in the shot put with a throw of 16.85 meters. Freshman Jared Kerr finished 10th with a 6.99 meter leap in the long jump and junior Devin Wynn took 19th in the triple jump with a distance of 14.12 meters.

Six Lady Hawks competed at the IC4A/ECAC championships as well, with senior Gayon Evans pacing the team with a first place finish in the 200 meter dash finals with a time of 23.23 seconds. Evans also took second in the 100 meter finals with a time of 11.75 seconds. In the 4x800 relay, the team of freshman Rachel Halmon, sophomores Shantol Hemley and Jheniel Kelly and Annis Mars earned a time of 8:55.63, good for seventh place and their best time of the season. Senior Shawnata Young finished 10th in the discus throw with a 43.08 meter toss.

Many, if not all of the Hawks who competed at the IC4A/ECAC Championships will have the chance to compete in the NCAA postseason tournament, beginning with the Eastern preliminary rounds to be held in Jacksonville, Fla. from May 29th thru the 31st.
