Savannah State Tops Hurdles, Relay Events At Tiger Twilight

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In the annual Tiger Twilight, hosted by Savannah State at T.A. Wright Stadium, the men’s outdoor track and field team dominated the hurdles and relay events, while the Lady Tigers garnered several top finishes on the track, and in the field.

In addition to SSU, 10 schools participated in the event. From the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Bethune-Cookman and Coppin State were represented. The Citadel and The University of South Carolina Beaufort also represented NCAA Division I.

From NCAA Division II, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Paine College, Clafin University, and Fort Valley State University were represented. Morris College, a NAIA member, also competed.

SSU junior Cameron Hall won the 110 meter hurdles event with a time of 14.23, followed by teammate Lemaar Shakir, who finished with a 15.01.

Shakir won the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.35. Brandon Davis finished behind Shakir with a 56.03. He was followed by Felton Chinn (56.13), and Randy Thomas (59.19).

The SSU team of Kenshard Hamilton, Justin Leggett, Hall, and Shakir won the 4x100m relay with a time of 41.12.

Kristopher Ballou won the 800m dash with a time of 1:56.84. Newcomer DeAndre Persons finished second in the 400m dash with a time of 49.80. Leggett finished third in the 100 and 200 dashes with times of 11.10 and 22.19, respectively.

In the field, Dolphurs Hayes finished second in the pole vault with a distance of 4.49m. Derrick Akins recorded a throw of 41.88m in the men’s discus for a second place finish.

Chavonta Roberts led the Lady Tigers on the track. Roberts won the 400m dash with a time of 58.44. SSU newcomer Aluntrea Davis finished second in the 200m dash with a time of 26.05, and third in the 100m with a time of 12.65.

Shakira Bartley ran a 15.17 in the 100 meter hurdles for a second place finish. Bartley ran a 1:09.67 in the 400m hurdles for a third place finish.

The relay team of Asia Stinson, Bartley, Davis, and Kortney Grey ran a 47.45 in the 4x100 relay, finishing second.

Rajeanne Jarrett won the women’s triple jump event with a distance of 11.38m. She finished fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.28m. Alysia Potts placed third in the pole vault with a distance of 2.95m.

The Tigers are back in action this weekend in Gainesville, Florida for the annual Florida Relays.
