CSU's Christina Epps finishes fourth in triple jump at Penn Relays
PHILADELPHIA --- Coppin State senior Christina Epps sure knows how to shine when the bright lights are focused on her.
Competing in the 120th edition of the Penn Relays before 38,135 spectators, Epps soared a season-best 42 feet, 7 inches (12.98 meters) to finish fourth overall in the triple jump women’s championship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.
Epps wasn’t initially happy with finishing fourth or jumping a season best because she had unfurled a great jump on her first attempt of the competition. Unfortunately, she fouled that attempt and it didn’t count. However, once the slight disappointment wore off, Epps was satisfied with her effort and focused on doing more damage next weekend at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships in Greensboro (N.C.).
Friday was a much different and better experience for Epps than last year. She was just returning from her torn anterior cruciate ligament injury when she competed. Epps felt more like a spectator than a competitor as she was finished after three attempts. This year’s event was more fun for Epps.
More white-out is needed to the Coppin State men’s track and field record books thanks to the Eagles’ lightning-quick 4x200 relay team.
Rosen Daniel, Donell Taylor, Kester Chase and Haysean Cowie-Clarke had a run to remember during the 120th edition of the Penn Relays before 38,135 sun-drenched fans Friday afternoon. Adding another sparkling highlight to what is blossoming into a special season, the Eagles quartet swooshed around Franklin Field’s beautiful red rubber track in a school-record time of 1 minute, 25.21 seconds.
Not only did Coppin State set a school record, it earned a return trip to the 4x200 relay ECAC Championship race on Super Saturday. They lowered the previous standard 1:25.62 set in 2010.
The Eagles had the fastest time of any Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference school that ran in the 4 x 200. Overall, CSU’s time was 12th overall out of 49 schools. So now this outdoor season, Coppin State has two school record relay teams. The 4 x 200 team joins the 4 x 100 as relays that set new program standards
