Morgan State Captures Second Straight Legacy Meet Title
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Morgan State women’s track and field team capped off a successful weekend on Saturday at Hughes Stadium, as they defended their 2013 Legacy Meet championship, by capturing this year’s title with a winning total of 95 points.
The Lady Bears, who produced a total of 17 top-10 finishes, fell six points shy of last year’s winning total of 101 points scored.
Duquesne placed second with 82 points, while Robert Morris came in third with 59 points. Fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe, Hampton, scored 58 points to take fourth and nearby UMBC finished fifth with 55 points.
Ishakeema Swain captured Morgan State’s lone gold of the weekend, following her first-place finish in the 1500 meter run in a time of 4:39.40. Swain would also place 11th in the 800 meter run, crossing the line in a time of 2:17.89.
Tere Cooley would finish second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.54.
Senior Ekundayo Sogbesan, who was competing for the final time at home, took second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.30. Cooley finished fourth in a time of 56.04, while Nichole Candelaria rand a time of 56.25 to place fifth.
Another senior, who was competing for the final time at Hughes Stadium, Teyanna Green, finished fifth in the 200 meter dash in a time of 24.48.
Teyanna Green would also run a time of 11.72 in the 100 meter dash to place fourth and Shenel Crooke finished seventh with a time of 11.96. Charisma Green finished 10th with a time of 12.24.
Morgan State took third and fourth, respectively in the 400 meter hurdles, as Jenea McCammon placed third in a time of 1:00.30, while Candelaria crossed the line in a time of 1:01.58 to place fourth. McCammon would also place fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a finishing time of 14.29.
The women’s field team was led by senior Ranita Mealer, who placed second in the shot put with a toss of 47-04.50. Mealer also had a throw of 117-07 in the javelin to place fourth.
Ajada Thomas placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 39-05.75 and Jermika Miller finished seventh with a jump of 37-01.75.
Sharita Moore finished eighth in the discus with a throw of 130-09.
The 4X400 meter relay team of Tere Cooley, Jenea McCammon, Nichole Candelaria and Ekundayo Sogbesan closed out the meet by running a time of 3:41.55 to take first place.
The Lady Bears return to the track on April 24-26, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the annual Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

Coppin State competes at the Legacy Meet
BALTIMORE – Deandra Daniel knew it was a matter of time before she soared higher than ever before. She had her sights set on clearing at least six feet in the high jump.
Consider the bar raised for Daniel as she established a school record while clearing 1.83 meters (6-0) to easily win the high jump at the Morgan State University Legacy Meet at Hughes Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Daniel wanted to achieve this goal since she captured the MEAC Indoor high jump title in February.
After taking care of the competition with an effort of 1.73 meters on her fifth attempt, Daniel progressively turned the high jump into her personal showcase. Displaying Michael Jordan-like hops, Daniel cleared 1.81 meters and then her holy grail of 1.83 meters.
She’s feeling good just in time for the Penn Relays and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) track and field championship meet upcoming in two weeks.
Daniel enjoyed a wonderful day in the field for Coppin State. She also finished third in the triple jump (39 feet, .5 inches) which was won by teammate Christina Epps, who soared 41-8. Jennifer Mitchell, the reigning MEAC Field Athlete of the Week, was fourth in the long jump (18-3.75).
Other highlights for the women included Ashley Bacote finishing second in the heptathlon with 4,229 points. Bacote also had a nice day as part of the Eagles 4 x 400-meter relay team. Teaming with Kadeem Curtis, Sheena Brownell and Alexis Marsh, the quartet was sixth in its race in a time of 3:52.57.
Coppin State’s women’s track team will be back in action Thursday in the Penn Relays at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia.
In men’s action, Mark London continues to amaze and impress.
The freshman rolled to victory in the 800-meter run at the Morgan State University Legacy Meet at Hughes Stadium Saturday night. London’s winning effort of 1 minute, 50.18 seconds highlighted a strong day for the Coppin State men’s track and field team.
Donnell Taylor and Rosen Daniel were two of the top five finishers in the 400-meter dash. Taylor was second (47.09 seconds) and Daniel was fifth (47.41). They were also part of the Eagles’ second place 4 x 400-meter relay team of Kester Chase and Alaric Coker. The quartet finished the race in 3:12.11.
Haysean Cowie-Clarke was third in the 100-meter dash (10.69 seconds) and Brandon Baskerville was fourth in the high jump (1.98 meters).
Coppin State’s men’s track team will be back in action Thursday in the Penn Relays at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia.

Hampton women fourth, men eight at Morgan State
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University women’s track & field team finished fourth in the Morgan State Legacy Meet at Hughes Stadium on Friday and Saturday, while the men’s track & field team came in eighth.
The Lady Pirates finished with 58 points. Morgan State tallied 95 points to take the women’s team title.
Hampton took gold in the women’s 4x100-meter relay, as senior Teiara Denmark, senior Breana Norman, sophomore Tanisha Greene, and junior Le’Quisha Parker ran a 45.66.
Senior Cydney Robinson turned in the Lady Pirates’ best individual performance of the weekend, running an 11:32.70 to come in second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Denmark finished third in the heptathlon after tallying 4,272 points, while Greene jumped 5.62 meters (18 feet, 5.25 inches) to come in third in the long jump.
Norman came in fourth in the 200-meter dash after running a 24.34.
On the men’s side, the Pirates racked up 40 points. Maryland Eastern Shore took the men’s team title with 91.33 points.
Sophomore Trey Holloway ran a season-best 13.97 to come in second in the 110-meter hurdles, while sophomore Emmanuel Price tallied 5,909 points to come in second in the decathlon.
Sophomore Christian Faber-Kinney was third with 5,814 points.
Graduate student Paris Reddick-Simmons ran a 1:51.17 in the 800-meter run to come in third, and Price jumped 14.39 meters (47 feet, 2.5 inches) to match his season best and come in fifth in the triple jump.
Senior Je’Von Hutchison ran a 21.61 to finish sixth in the 200-meter dash.
Junior Sulaiman Freed lobbed the shot put 15.66 meters (51 feet, 4.5 inches) to come in seventh.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will compete in the historic Penn Relays this Thursday through Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa.

DSU Men Place 15th, Women Finish 20th in Morgan State Legacy Event
BALTIMORE, Md. – Saturday, the Delaware State track & field program took part in the Morgan State Legacy competition as the men finished 15th (15.50 points) out of 26 teams, while the women placed 20th (eight points) out of 25 squads.
For the men, the combination of Sharad Mackey, Gary Melton, Alpha Manaray and David Okeke finished second (42.23) behind Howard in the 4x100-Meter Relay to headline the top performances for the Hornets.
Meanwhile, Melton came in fifth (22-07.50 – 6.89m) in the Long Jump, whereas Charles Wulff-Cochrane also placed fifth in the 400-Meter Hurdles with a time of 53.65.
On the women’s side, Ketsia Dornevil led the way for the Hornets with a fifth place (2:13.68) finish in the 800 Meters, followed by Maria Gwengi taking sixth in the Shot Put with a mark of 42-02.75 (12.87m).
Coming up, the Hornets will host the DSU Meet this Tuesday at Alumni Stadium.
