MSU earns six ECAC qualifiers at Mason Spring Invitational
FAIRFAX, Va. -The Lady Bears’ outdoor track and field team had a successful outing on Saturday afternoon at the Mason Spring Invitational hosted by George Mason University. Morgan State finished the evening at George Mason Stadium with five top-10 finishes and six ECAC qualifiers.
Ekundayo Sogbesan ran an ECAC qualifying time of 54.80 to finish third in the 400 meter dash.
Jenea McCammon placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:00.02, while Nichole Candelaria came in seventh in a time of 1:00.53. Both athletes ran ECAC qualifying times.
Teyanna Green finished in ninth-place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.68 and just missed out in advancing to the finals of the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.95 to place 10th in the preliminaries. Both of Green’s times qualified for the ECAC championship.
The Lady Bears will return to the track next week (Friday-Saturday, April 18-19) as they host the 11th annual Legacy Meet held at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State. This year’s meet will honor the classes of 1971-75.
The meet gets underway on Friday at noon with the heptathlon along with the men’s and women’s javelin and hammer throw. The running events get started around 3 p.m. with the women’s and men’s steeplechase.
On Friday, The Morgan State women’s track and field team made the short trip to crosstown rival Coppin State on Friday afternoon for the Don Webster Invitational. The Lady Bears would leave the meet with 13 top-10 finishes, including six top five places.
Morgan State took the top two spots in the 100 meter dash, as Shenel Crooke captured gold in a time of 12.12, while Jenea McCammon came in second with a time of 12.30. Sianna Wynter placed seventh in a time of 12.83.
Tere Cooley also took home gold, as she ran a time of 2:14.51 to win the 800 meter run. Ishakeema Swain placed third in a time of 2:17.72.
Nynneya Columbus ran a time of 4:53.66 in the 1500 meter run to place fourth. McCammon placed sixth in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 25.45 and Charisma Green finished 10th with a time of 25.89.
Wynter finished sixth in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 59.06 and Imani Daye ran a time of 59.59 to place seventh.
In the field events, Ajada Thomas (11.10m) and Jermika Miller (10.91m) placed third and fourth respectively, in the triple jump.
Ke’Von Lumb took 10th in the long jump with a jump of 5.34m, while Aharon Abdus-Salaam had a toss of 8.74m in the shot put to place 10th.
The Lady Bears return to action on Saturday, April 12 when they travel to Fairfax, Va. to compete in the Mason Spring Invitational, hosted by George Mason University.
On the men’s side at the George Mason Invitational, The Morgan State men's track and field team sent a small contingent to compete in the George Mason Invitational on Saturday.
Emmanuel Stewart led the Bears by capturing the discus throw. The senior tossed a 56.65 to beat out Navy’s Zachary Duncavage (58.74).
Jefferson Butler and Isaqh Rana competed in the shot put where they placed fourth (16.22) and 13th (15.26) place, respectively.
Onyx Johnson ran a time of 1:51.56 in the 800 meter run to place 19th.

Coppin Track has good showing at Don Webster Invitational
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Don Webster Invitational was graced with warm weather, a hint of sunshine, outstanding efforts by the Coppin State men’s and women’s track teams and reigning IAAF world champion/Olympic gold medalist Francena McCorory, who cruised to a convincing victory in the 400 meters.
With seasonal and personal records, the Coppin State men’s and women’s track teams put on a respectable performance in front of an energetic home crowd. It was an all-around admirable day for the Eagles.
The Coppin men were led by the performance of sophomore sprinter, Haysean Cowie-Clarke with a stunning victory at 100 meters, in a time of 10.61 seconds. To add to Coppin’s standout day, was junior Jeremy Dorsey, sophomore Donell Taylor and Junior Kester Chase.
Dorsey finished second in the 110 meter high hurdles in a time of 14.54 seconds. Taylor recorded a second place finish in the 400-meters with a personal best of 47.34 seconds and Chase finished a strong fourth with a respectable 47.69 seconds. The quartet of Cowie-Clarke, Rosen Daniel, Chase and Dorsey finished second to UMES in the 4x100 meter relay (40.78).
The women also had wonderful performances throughout the day led by sophomore Tanaya Yarde and her first place finish in the 400 meter hurdles (1:02.05). Also, adding to the team’s success was senior Jennifer Mitchell and sophomore Deandra Daniel.
Mitchell won the triple jump (11.90 meters) and finished second in the long jump with a personal best of 5.84 meters, a solid performance just in time for the next month’s MEAC Championship meet at North Carolina A&T. Daniel continued her dominance as she bounded to victory in the high jump (1.76 meters)
The women also had more student-athletes meet MEAC qualifying standards. In addition to Yarde (400-meter hurdles), Mitchell (long and triple jumps) and Daniel (high jump), Danielle Baker (high jump) and Shena Brownell (400-meter dash) also earned MEAC qualifying marks.
The Coppin State women will return to action Tuesday afternoon when it competes at Delaware State. Both teams will compete in the Morgan State Legacy Meet next Friday and Saturday.

Hampton has strong showing at Don Webster Invitational
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams had a strong showing at the Don Webster Invitational, which was hosted by Coppin State University on Friday afternoon and evening.
The Lady Pirates won four events, while the Pirates won two.
Sophomore Ce’aira Brown took the 1,500-meter run crown with a season-best time of 4:32.97, while senior Teiara Denmark took the long jump title with a season-best mark of 6.25 meters – just .01 meters off the school record.
Sophomore Tanisha Greene won the 200-meter dash with a 24.62, and sophomore Kaylor Murray ran a 12:57.54 to take the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Junior Le’Quisha Parker came in second in the 400-meter dash – behind former Lady Pirate Francena McCorory – with a season-best 55.00.
Senior Breana Norman ran a 13.83 to finish third in the 100-meter hurdles.
Denmark, Norman, Greene, and Parker were in the 4x100-meter relay, coming in second after running a 46.06.
Junior Chidi Okezie won the 400-meter dash on the men’s side with a 47.07, while sophomore Emmanuel Price jumped a season-best 14.39 meters to win the triple jump.
Junior Sulaiman Fareed came in second in the shot put with a season-best mark of 16.04 meters, and graduate student Paris Reddick-Simmons was second in the 1,500-meter run with a season-best time of 4:06.78.
Freshman Rayon Black ran a 1:52.75 to finish third in the 800-meter run.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to Baltimore, Md. on Saturday for the Morgan State Legacy Meet.

Hornets Turn in Big Performances at Coppin State, UD Over Weekend
BALTIMORE, Md. & Newark, Del. - – Over the weekend, the Delaware State track & field program continued its outdoor portion of the 2013-14 season with two competitions.
On Friday in the Don Webster Invitational, hosted by Coppin State, DSU’s Maria Gwengi was the top performer on the women’s side with a second place (41-0.25 - 12.50m) finish in the Shot Put. Janae Wilson, meanwhile, took fourth (18-9.00 - 5.69m) in the Long Jump, whereas Shalaya Sidney finished fifth (15.07) in the 100-Meter Hurdles.
The following day in the University of Delaware Open, Gwengi led all DSU women performers by finishing second (41-06.00 – 12.65m) in the Shot Put once again.
On the men’s side, Stephen Bowe led the way for the Hornets in the Don Webster Invitational by placing third (47.34) out of 19 runners in the 400-Meter Dash, as Charles Wulff-Cochrane crossed the finish line at 14.83 to finish third in the 110-Meter Hurdles.
In the UD Open, Bowe’s outing featured winning (46.56) the 400-Meter Dash and finishing second (21.32) in the 200-Meter Dash, while David Okeke won the 100-Meter Dash with a time of 10.89 and placed third (22.23) in the 200-Meter Dash.
Rounding out the top performers for the men in the UD Open was Wulff-Cuchrane winning the 110-Meter Hurdles (15.12) and the 400-Meter Hurdles (53.40).
Coming up, the Hornets will host the Delaware State Meet this Wednesday.

Kerr qualifies for World Junior Championships
BALTIMORE, Md. and FAIRFAX, Va. — With a time of 52.69 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles at the George Mason Spring Invitational, University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman Jared Kerr qualified for the World Junior Championships this coming July in Eugene, Oregon. Running in heat two, Kerr earned a third place finish, beating his previous season high by nearly a full second. Kerr’s accomplishment was just the key highlight in a series of top marks and times for the Hawks track teams this past weekend in two separate meets.
At the Don Webster Invitational hosted by Coppin State on Friday, the Hawks came away with several wins, including Kerr, who in this meet earned the top place in the long jump with a height of 7.44 meters. Fellow freshmen Khalil Rmidi Kinnini won the 1500 meter race with a time of 3:57.59, a personal best for him in the outdoor season, and Taj Showalter qualified for the 110 meter hurdles final, finishing fourth with a time of 14.97 seconds. The relay team of seniors Rico Taylor, Javon Spencer, Ramone Waite and Aaron Chatmon earned a top place in the 4x100 relay with a time of 40.28 seconds. Finally, junior Dillon Simon won his third shot put event during the outdoor season, with a throw of 17.67 meters.
On the women’s side, a team of four reliable relay runners, sophomores Shantol Hemley and Jheniel Kelly, junior Annis Mars and senior Gayon Evans won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:05.28, just beating a second team of Hawk runners. Additionally, senior Shawnata Young won the women’s shot put event with a toss of 12.78 meters, earning UMES a shot put sweep for both genders.
Facing a greater challenge at George Mason on Saturday, many Hawks came away with many top ten finishes. Evans continued her strong season with a second place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.87 seconds. Young carried her strong performance from Friday into Saturday, with a 12.52 meter, sixth place shot put finish and a 36.46 meter, ninth place finish in the discus throw.
For the men, Waite qualified for the 100 meter dash finals, ultimately finishing sixth with a time of 10.71 seconds. He followed that with a fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.33 seconds, while his fellow seniors Chatmon and Spencer finished seventh and tenth, respectively, in the same race at 21.61and 21.70 seconds. Chatmon followed the 200 meter dash finish with a fourth place finish in the 400 meter run with a time of 47.71 seconds.
Along with Kerr, freshman Orwell Maylor finished in the top ten in the 400 meter hurdles, ending in ninth with a time of 54.03 seconds. Rmidi Kinnini finished seventh in the 3000 meter steeplechase at 9:33.46.
Three Hawks earned top ten finishes in the field events. Taylor earned a fifth place finish with a height of 2.04 meters in the high jump, and junior Devin Wynn finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 14.44 meters. Fresh off his win in the shot put at Coppin State, Simon finished third in the discus at 49.99 meters.
There was no team scoring for the meet at Coppin State, but at George Mason, the women finished 16th with fourteen total points, while the men finished sixth with a total of 59 points.
Kerr’s performance in the 400m hurdles earns him the chance to run in the World Junior Championships which will take place on July 22nd in Oregon. But for now, he and the rest of the Hawks track team will now travel back to Baltimore for an Easter weekend meet at Morgan State University this coming Friday and Saturday.
