Morgan State Concludes Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Morgan State women’s track and field team was amongst the 114 NCAA Division I, II and III schools which competed over the weekend at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State. 4,158 men and women were registered for the 58 events.

Tere Cooley ran a time of 55.35 in the 400 meter dash to finish 10th. Jenea McCammon placed 16th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.41, while Nichole Candelaria finished 20th in a time of 1:02.83.

The Lady Bears’ 4X400 meter relay team (Nichole Candelaria, Ekundayo Sogbesan, Jenea McCammon, Tere Cooley) ran a time of 3:43.08 finished sixth. Morgan State’s 4X100 meter relay team comprised of (Jenea McCammon, Teyanna Green, Charisma Green and Ekundayo Sogbesan) finished tied for seventh with a time of 46.59.

Sharita Moore had a throw of 134-03 in the discus to place 21st, as the Lady Bears finished the weekend with six top-25 finishes.

The Lady Bears will head to Gainesville, Fla. to take part in the Pepsi Florida Relays hosted by the University of Florida on April 4-5.

 

 

Lady Bears Have Good Showing At UMBC Before Heavy Rains Shorten Meet

BALTIMORE, Md. - While part of the Morgan State women’s track and field was competing at the Raleigh Relays, the other members stayed close to home and took part in the UMBC Big Dawg Invitational on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon on the campus of the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

The Lady Bears finished the day with nine top 15 finishes, including two top five marks at a rain-soaked UMBC Stadium. The meet was cut short and was called at 3:10 p.m. due to heavy rains and impending lightning in the Baltimore area.

Sianna Wynter led the Lady Bears with a third-place finish in the 400 meter dash in a time of 1:01.22. Imani Daye placed 10th with a time of 1:02.88.

Bobbi Addison placed 11th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.37, while Aharon Abdus-Salaam came in 12th with a time of 28.43.

Ishakeema Swain ran a time of 4:49.34 in the 1500 meter run to place fourth, while Nynneya Columbus came in 16th with a time of 5:06.57.

Jada Boyd finished 13th in the 800 meter dash with a time of 2:36.24. Swain ran a time of 2:41.09 to place 14th, while Columbus was 15th with a time of 2:41.23.

Kiara Jelks placed ninth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time 1:15.94.

Morgan State returns to action next week when they head to Gainesville, Fla. To take part in the Pepsi Florida Relays.

Bears See Success at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Morgan State men's track & field team registered five top 10 marks at the 2014 Raleigh Relays at Derr Track on the N.C. State campus this weekend.

Junior Keith Davis capped the final day with a third place finish in the javelin with a throw of 62.42 meters, while senior Emmanuel Stewart placed eighth with a toss of 58.19 meters.

Morgan State's 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Evan John, Haneef Hardy, Onyx Johnson and Joel Roberson recorded a seventh place mark with a time of 3:12.16 seconds -- it also marked the fourth fastest time in the MEAC this season.

Senior Jefferson Butler finished seventh in the shot put with a mark of 16.00m and Stewart finished seventh overall in the discus with a toss of 52.83m.

Roberson posted a 48.37 to finish in 14th place in the 400m dash finals.

Morgan State was one of 114 NCAA schools, as well as a contingent of club and professional teams, at the prestigious meet. A total of 4,158 athletes competed in 58 events.

Following the Raleigh Relays, the Bears will be in action on April 4-5 at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida.

Maryland Eastern Shore earns strong finishes despite competition and rain
 
RALEIGH, N.C. and BALTIMORE, Md. - After a pair of third place finishes last weekend at the
Navy Invitational, two separate meets awaited the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) track teams this awaited.
 
Although neither event was subject to team scoring, the group of athletes that went to the Raleigh Relays faced a tough challenge from a large field of other colleges from across the country, while the group that went to Baltimore for the UMBC Big Dawg Invitational had difficulties from the inclement weather. However, there were several excellent performances by a good number of Hawks throughout the weekend.
 
Junior Gayon Evans qualified for the 100 meter dash finals by finishing first in a field of 157 athletes with a time of 11.56 seconds, and then earned a fourth place finish in the finals at 11.77 seconds. Both sophomores Shantol Hemley and Taylor Folk registered their seasonal best in the 400 meter dash, and the 4x400 relay team of Hemley, Evans, freshman Rachel Halmon, and junior Annis Mars beat their Navy performance with a time of 3:47.15, while placing 11th.
 
The men's team also enjoyed its lion's share of good performances in Raleigh. Senior Aaron Chatman finished fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.67 seconds, and fellow senior Ramone Waite beat his season high with a time of 49.22 seconds. The 4x200 relay team of senior Javon Spencer, Waite, Chatman and junior Hakeem Harris finished eighth with a time of 1:26.53.
 
In the field event, freshman Jared Kerr placed fourth in the long jump with a jump of 7.37 meters, and junior Dillon Simon had two top ten finishes-a second place showing in the shot put with a distance of 17.26 meters and a fifth place showing in the discus throw with a season-high of 53.15 meters.
 
At the UMBC Big Dawg Invitational, there were several top ten finishes before the event was cut short by the inclement weather that has hit Baltimore this weekend. Senior Codjo Gbedo finished sixth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:00.19, with freshman Sodiq Amusat right behind him in seventh at 2:01.81. Freshman Khalil Rmidi Kinnini picked up where his indoor season left off with a strong second place performance of 4:01.44 in the 1500 meter run.
 
A third Hawk freshman, Taj Showalter qualified for the 110 meter hurdles finals with a fourth place finish and a time of 16.33 seconds in the preliminaries, and followed that with a 16.02 second, third place effort in the finals. On the women's side, freshman Alexis Daley finished ninth in the shot put with a distance of 9.29 meters.
 
The Hawks will now join together as one team once again for another trip to North Carolina, as they look to compete in the Vertklasse Meeting on the campus of High Point University.

Shakir, Leggett Lead SSU Track & Field At Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Savannah State junior Lemaar Shakir and freshman Justin Leggett led the Tigers’ outdoor track and field team with multiple top place finishes at the 2014 Winthrop Invitational this past weekend in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Shakir won the 400 meter hurdles event with a time of 52.57. In the 110 meter hurdles, the Macon, Georgia native finished sixth with a time of 15.23.

Leggett, a Kingsland, Georgia native, garnered third place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. He topped the 100 with a time of 11.13 and the 200 with a time of 21.91. SSU junior Cameron Hall finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 22.15.

The SSU team of Kenshard Hamilton, Leggett, Hall and Shakir finished in second place with a time of 41.82 in the 4x100 meter relay. In the 4x400, the team of Kristopher Ballou, Shakir, Brandon Davis, and DeAndre Pearsons ran a 3:15.88, also finishing in second place.

Savannah State junior Asia Stinson led the Lady Tigers. Stinson ran a 12.18 in the 100 meter dash for a second place finish. She finished first in the preliminaries with an 11.93.

Chavonta Roberts ran a 59.13 in the 400 meter dash to finish in sixth place. Michaela McGhee finished the 800 meter dash with a 2:22.75.

In the 4x400 meter relay, Shakira Bartley, McGhee, Jaymi White and Roberts placed sixth with a time of 4:06.45.

Bartley, competing in the field events, recorded a distance of 5.20 meters (17’ 0.75”) in the long jump for an eighth place finish.

Savannah State returns to T.A. Wright Stadium for their final home meet of the season on Wednesday, April 2. The annual Savannah State Twilight is slated to begin at 4 p.m.

Hampton wraps up competitive weekend at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams were competitive this past Friday and Saturday at the Raleigh Relays, which were held at North Carolina State’s Paul Derr Track.

The Pirates won three events, while the Lady Pirates brought home two gold medals.

Senior Stefano Nardini set a new school record in winning the javelin throw, tossing the implement 72.01 meters (236 feet, three inches). Nardini is currently ranked eighth in the nation in the javelin.

Junior Chidi Okezie won the 200-meter dash invitational with a 21.15.

Okezie was also on the sprint medley squad – along with sophomore Trey Holloway, senior Je’Von Hutchison, and junior Edose Ibadin – that took gold with a time of 3:21.68.

Holloway came in third in the 110-meter hurdles after running a 14.22.

The Lady Pirates also took gold in the sprint medley, as senior Breana Norman, junior Le’Quisha Parker, senior Malekah Holland, and sophomore Ce’aira Brown ran a 3:52.92.

Norman and Holland were also on the gold-medal winning 4x100-meter relay squad – along with sophomore Jenira Shufford and freshman J’Niyah Knox-Wilson – that turned in a 45.84.

Brown also came in second in the 800-meter run invitational with a season-best 2:06.94. Parker ran a 23.89 to come in third in the 200-meter dash invitational.

Norman came in fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.72.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be in Williamsburg, Va. on Friday and Saturday for the Colonial Relays hosted by the College of William & Mary.
