Coles paces NSU in 400 Meters at Virginia Cup

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Steve Coles clocked a season-best time in the 400 meter dash to pace the Spartan men’s track and field team on Saturday at the Virginia Cup hosted by the University of Virginia.

Coles posted a time of 48.66 seconds to finish third. That was the second-fastest time in his career, behind only a 48.49 he clocked last year at William & Mary.

Redshirt freshman Michael Smith and sophomore Ryan Turner had the next-highest finishes for the Spartans on Saturday. Smith ran a time of 15.04 seconds to claim fourth place in the 110 meter hurdles, and Turner clocked a 57.93 to take fourth in the 400 meter hurdles.

In other running events, Damtew Adnew placed seventh in the 1,500 meters (4:11.30) and the 4x400 team of Damond Burns, Markeith Smith, Kyle Green and Coles was fourth in a time of 3:22.31.

Sophomore Clifton Thompson had the best finish for a Spartan male in the field events. He was fourth in the discus (157 feet, 1 inch).

The Spartans are off next week and return to action on April 3-5 with part of the squad participating in the Florida Relays and others at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.

Sophomore Kiara Howell earned multiple top-10 finishes for the second straight week to lead the NSU women’s track and field team at the Virginia Cup hosted by the University of Virginia.

Howell improved on her marks in both the discus and javelin from the outdoor season-opening Shamrock Invitational last week. And just like at Shamrock, Howell finished in the top 10 in both events. Howell had a best effort of 146 feet to finish as runner-up in the discus, and was fourth in the javeling with a best throw of 127-5.

The only other two athletes who competed for the NSU women in field events Saturday also placed in the top 10 of their events. Also in the discus, freshman De’Andra Doyle was third with a top effort of 132-8. She also took 10th in the javelin with a throw of 79-4.

In the pole vault, junior Tiara Davis cleared 10-5.5 to finish fourth.

The Spartans’ 4x400 relay team posted the highest finish for NSU in a running event Saturday. The quartet of Champagne Bell, Justice Briscoe, Rayiana Johnson and Kaydianne McKenzie took fourth in 3 minutes, 59.74 seconds.

In other running events, junior Torie Cunningham took fifth in the 100 meter dash (12.23 seconds) and Briscoe was sixth in the 400 meters (59.45). Sophomore Rachel Webb placed ninth in the 1,500 meters (4:58.96) and 11th in the 800 (2:22.78).

The Spartans are off next week and return to action on April 3-5 with part of the squad participating in the Florida Relays and others at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg.

Cooley, T. Green Lead Lady Bears At Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -The Morgan State women’s track and field team spent the weekend competing at the Wake Forest Open, hosted by Wake Forest University. Morgan State finished the meet with 11 top-10 finishes, including six top-five finishes.

On Friday, the Lady Bears had six top-five finishes on the day.

Teyanna Green led the Lady Bears on the track with a third-place finish in the 100 meter dash, finishing in a time of 11.86.

Tere Cooley ran a time of 56.34 to place fifth in the 400 meter dash, while Nichole Candelaria came in eighth with a time of 56.58.

Nynneya Columbus crossed the finish line in the B-section of the 1500 meter run in a time of 4:51.90 to take fifth.

In the field events, Jeanelle Ovid finished in a three-way tie for second in the high jump invitational with a mark of 5-05.75.

Jermika Miller placed fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 37-10.50, while fellow teammate Ajada Thomas finished fifth at 37-08.75.

On Day 2, the Lady Bears produced four top-10 finishes with one relay team, one field event and two running events.

On the track, Teyanna Green ran a time of 24.87 to place sixth in the 200 meter dash and Cooley finished sixth in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:13.16.

The Lady Bears’ 4X400 meter relay team (Jenea McCammon, Teyanna Green, Rowanna Watson and Jeanelle Ovid) finished ninth in a time of 3:58.88.

Sharita Moore had a throw of 133-09 in the discus to place eighth.

The Lady Bears will return to the track on March 26 when they travel to crosstown rival Coppin State for the Coppin State Twilight Meet beginning at 3 p.m. on the campus of Coppin State.

Morgan State’s men’s track & field team continued its 2014 outdoor season this weekend at the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Bears had a combined eight Top 10 finishes.

Leading the way for the Bears once again was their throwers as Emmanuel Stewart  continued his steller senior season, finishing third in the discus with a throw of 170- 7.00 (51.99m). Keith Davis also had a solid effort by finishing seventh in the javelin with a toss of 212-8.00 (64.83m). Isahq Rana and Jefferson Butler put in a strong showing in the shot put by posting 10th (49-4.25) and 11th place finishes (49-3.00), respectively.                                

On the track, a trio of Bears earned top 10 finishes in the 400 meter dash. Joel Roberson crossed the finish line in third place in a time of 48.26 seconds, while teammates Haneef Hardy (48.88) and Evan Johnson (49.02) posted ninth and 10th place finishes.

Onyx Johnson tied with Appalachian State’s Raphael Rojas for fourth place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.56.

Morgan State’s relay teams also had impressive outings. The Bears 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Olumide Akinbinu, Haneef Hardy, Onyx Johnson and Ahmad Abram claimed fifth place in a time of 3:20.03, while the 4x100 meter relay team (Olumide Akinbinu, Rolando Reid, Joel Roberson, Ricardo Griggs) finished eighth place in 42.94 seconds.

Hornets Place Mark on Navy Invitational, Wake Forest Open to Begin Outdoor Season

ANNAPOLIS, Md./WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Over the weekend, the Delaware State track & field program participated in the Navy Invitational and the Wake Forest Open to begin the outdoor portion of the 2013-14 season.

On the men’s side, the Hornets finished last out of five teams in the Navy Invitational, but the combination of Joseph Crenshaw, David Okeke, Simon Reid and James Peteet beat out Navy to win the 4x100-meter relay event with a time of 42.38. In addition, Crenshaw, along with the help of Henry Nicholas, Terrell Oliver and Nathaniel Tucker, placed fourth (3:23.43) in the 4x400-meter relay competition.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side in the Wake Forest Open, senior Ketsia Dornevil took second (2:11.42) out of 82 runners in the 800 meters, followed by a ninth place finish (56.91) in the 400 meters.  DSU’s Omealla Gordon, on the other hand, also turned in a top 10 performance in the 400 meters by crossing the finish line at 56.42 to place seventh.

In the field events, the Hornets were led by Maria Gwengi finishing sixth (42-6.25 – 12.96m) in the Shot Put and Shalaya Sidney placing 10th (17-6.25 – 5.34m) in the Long Jump.

Coming up, the Hornets will head to Baltimore, Md. for the Coppin State Twilight 1 competition this Wednesday.

Savannah State competes in Shamrock Invite

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Savannah State men’s and women’s track & field team’s continued the 2014 outdoor season with competition in the 2014 Shamrock Invitational this past weekend.

Leading the Lady Tigers, Asia Stinson garnered a third place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.69. Jazy Seay-Blane topped the 200 meter dash with a fourth place finish and a time of 24.41. Stinson ran a 24.45 in the same event, finishing in sixth place.

The team of Stinson, Seay-Blane, Aluntrea Davis and Kortney Gray ran a 46.19 in the 4x100 relay for a fourth place finish. The same team ran a 1:39.04 in the 4x200 meter relay, finishing in fifth place.

In the field, Alysia Potts led the Lady Tigers with a seventh place finish in the pole vault competition, with a distance of 3.05m (10’0”). Rajeanne Jarrett recorded a distance of 5.25m (17’ 2.75”) in the long jump for 11th place, and 11.55m (37” 10.75) in the triple jump.

For the Tigers, Kenshard Hamilton ran a 10.72 in the 100 meter dash, placing in sixth. Justin Leggett ran a 21.85 in the 200 meter dash, finishing in 11th place.

In the 400 meter dash, Antwuan Poole ran a 49.04, followed by DeAndre Pearsons, who ran a 49.26. Kristopher Ballou finished the 800 meter dash with a 1:56.12.

After topping the preliminaries list, Cameron Hall ran a 14.45 for a fourth place finish in the 110 meter hurdles, followed by Lemaar Shakir (14.84), and Felton Chinn (15.15).

Shakir ran a 52.99 in the 400 meter hurdles for a third place finish. Chinn followed Shakir with a 55.50 in the same event.

The six man team of Hamilton, Leggett, Hall, Shakir, Poole, and Pearsons ran a 1:25.74 in the 4x200 meter relay for a fourth place finish.

In the 4x100 meter relay, the team of Hamilton, Leggett, Hall, and Shakir finished fifth with a 41.50. Pearsons, Brandon Davis, Shakir, Ballou, Poole, and Hall ran a 3:16.69 in the 4x400 for a seventh place finish.

In the field, Dolphurs Hayes recorded a distance of 4.75m (14-07.25) for a 13th place finish in the pole vault.

Savannah State continues the 2014 outdoor campaign with a visit to the Winthrop Invitational on March 27.

Hampton begins outdoor season with strong start at Virginia Cup

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams had a strong open to the 2014 outdoor season on Saturday, combining to win five event titles at the Virginia Cup at Lannigan Field.

The Lady Pirates won three events, while the Pirates took home two titles.

Junior Le’Quisha Parker won the women’s 200-meter dash after running a 23.72, while sophomore Ce’aira Brown ran a 2:11.45 to take gold in the 800-meter run.

Senior Breana Norman won the 100-meter hurdles with a 13.60.

Norman and Parker were each on the 4x100-meter relay team – along with freshman J’Niyah Knox-Wilson and sophomore Tanisha Greene – that came in second with a 47.46.

Parker, Greene, and Brown were on the 4x400-meter relay squad – along with senior Malekah Holland – that took silver with a 3:43.24.

Senior Cydney Robinson ran a 56.60 in the 400-meter dash to finish second.

Norman was also fourth in the 100-meter dash with a 24.45.

The Pirates won gold in the men’s 4x400-meter relay, as freshman Rayon Black, junior Chidi Okezie, junior Edose Ibadin, and senior Je’Von Hutchison running a 3:12.40.

Ibadin also won the 400-meter dash with a 48.48.

Sophomore Trey Holloway turned in a pair of second-place finishes, running a 10.61 in the 100-meter dash and a 14.12 in the 110-meter hurdles.

Okezie was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a 10.76, while Ibadin ran a 22.12 in the 200-meter dash to come in fifth.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Raleigh Relays.
