SSU Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season With Dominate Performance
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State men’s and women’s track & field teams opened the 2014 outdoor season with a dominate performance in the annual SSU Eyeopener, hosted by the Tigers at T.A. Wright Stadium on Saturday.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers picked up a combined 19 first place finishes against an eight team field. Along with SSU, Edward Waters, Albany State, Savannah College of Art & Design, Armstrong Atlantic State, Morehouse College, Albany State, Mercer University and Paine College competed on Saturday.
Jazy Seay-Blane led the Lady Tigers with first place finishes in the 200 and 400 meter dashes with times of 24.69, and 55.89, respectively.
Asia Stinson grabbed top honors in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.26. In the 100 meter hurdles, Shakira Bartley ran a 15.55 for first place honors. Bartley won the 400 meter hurdles as well, with a time of 1:11.56.
In the 4x100 meter relay, the Lady Tiger team of Stinson, Seay-Blane, Aluntrea Davis and Kortney Grey ran a 46.93 to win the event. The team of Chavonta Roberts, Seay-Blane, Bartley and Davis took first place honors with a time of 4:16.74.
In the field events, Chantia Taylor won the high jump event with a distance of 1.42 meters. Alysia Potts topped the pole vault competition with a distance of a 2.98m.
Kimberly Wilson won the long jump event for SSU with a distance of 5.80m, followed by Jaymi White in third with a 5.42m, Jarrett (5.41m), Grey (5.34m), and Bartley (5.12m).
Indiah Bell finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.53 meters.
For the Tigers, SSU sophomore Kenshard Hamilton won the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.74. Kristopher Ballou won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.49.
Cameron Hall won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.23, followed by teammate Lemaar Shakir in second place with a time of 14.44. Shakir won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 52.74.
In the 4x100 meter relay, the team of Hamilton, Antwuan Poole, Hall and Shakir won the event with a time of 41.23.
The SSU team of Ballou, Shakir, Leggett and Brandon Davis won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:22.05.
In the men’s field events, Larry Bellamy won the high jump with a distance of 1.62m. Dolphurs Hayes won the pole vault competition with a vault of 4.62m, followed closely by teammate Timothy Jackson in second place with a distance of 4.47m. Derrick Akins won the men’s discus throw with a distance of 41.53m.
The Tigers continue the 2014 outdoor season on March 1 with the Savannah State Relays at T.A. Wright Stadium. The competition is set to begin at 12 p.m.

NCCU HURDLERS BALLARD, JASMIN EARN FIRST PLACE FINISHES AT DENNIS CRADDOCK INVITATIONAL
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Capturing first place in the 60-meter hurdles, North Carolina Central University hurdlers Bryan Jasmin and Anthonia Ballard swept the men’s and women’s races during the Dennis Craddock Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill on Feb. 21-22 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Ballard finished with a time of 8.56 seconds, while Jasmin crossed the finish line in 8.17.
In addition, the men’s 4x400 relay team earned a first place victory, completing the 1600 meters in 3:23.60. The B squad finished fourth with a time of 3:29.41.
As individual competitors, Carlton Edwards Jr. recorded a fifth place finish in the 400m dash (51.41), Kevin Vincent posted a sixth place finish in the 200m dash (22.76), Snonsio Boye-Weah finished seventh in the 60m dash (7.01), and Deandre James earned a seventh place in the 400m (51.62) and an eighth place in the 800m run (2:00.64) for the Eagles.
For the Lady Eagles, the 4x400 relay recorded a fourth place finish with a time of 3:58.03. Behind Ballard, Jasmine Wanamaker and Delesha Conquest finished fifth (9.13) and sixth (9.22), respectively, in the 60m hurdles. Darlene Girardeau earned fifth place finishes in the 60m dash (7.86) and long jump (5.46m). Alexis Sherrill posted a fifth place finish in the high jump (1.55m). La’Creesha Gore finished sixth in the 60m dash (7.87), along with Zoe Ellis who also recorded a sixth place finish in the triple jump (11.93m).
The men’s and women’s track and field squads will return to competition on Mar. 14-15 to begin the outdoor season at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C.

Hampton athletes compete in Alex Wilson Invitational
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Select Hampton University track & field student-athletes competed in the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Saturday at the Loftus Sports Complex.
Senior Je’Von Hutchison turned in the best individual performance of the weekend, running a school-record 46.55 to come in second in the men’s 400-meter dash. He also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that came in sixth with a school-record 3:09.04.
Freshman Rayon Black, junior Chidi Okezie, and junior Edose Ibadin were also on that squad.
Sophomore Trey Holloway came in fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.00.
The Lady Pirates came in third in the women’s 4x400-meter relay with a season-best time of 3:36.34. Senior Malekah Holland, junior Le’Quisha Parker, senior Emmy Fraenk, and sophomore Ce’aira Brown were on that squad.
Senior Breana Norman ran an 8.64 to come in fourth in the 60-meter hurdles.
Brown was sixth in the 800-meter run with a season-best 2:06.88.
