Dorsey and Green are winners for Coppin State men's track
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Jeremy Dorsey and Shane Green were individual event winners for the Coppin State men’s indoor track and field team during at the Navy Invitational at the Wesley Brown Fieldhouse Saturday.
Dorsey and Green were among seven Coppin State student-athletes who also achieved Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship qualifying standards. Dorsey finished the 60-meter hurdles in 7.94 seconds while Green won the triple jump with a mark of 47 feet, 11 inches.
Also reaching MEAC championship qualifying marks were Spencer Johnson (triple jump), Fabian Hayles (800-meter run) and Haysean Cowie-Clarke (60-meter dash). Johnson was second in the triple jump with an effort of 47-5.75. Cowie-Clarke also placed second in his event in 6.94 seconds. Hayles was fourth his event, crossing the finish line in 1 minute, 56.91 seconds.
Mark London and Alaric also earned MEAC qualifying standards in the mile even though each athlete ran the 1,500-meters.Those 1,500-meter times will be converted to mile times.
Elsewhere for the Eagles finishing among the top eight in their respective events were Alvin Fulwood (high jump), Alaric Coker (1,500-meter run), Michael James (800) and Anster Charles (200). The Eagles’ 4 x 400-meter relay squad was fourth (3:20.47).
Coppin State returns to action on Sat. Jan.10, 2015 when it competes in the George Mason Invitational.

Coppin State women compete at Captains’ Invitational
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Melissa Caddle-Hope and Deandra Daniel were individual event winners for the Coppin State women’s indoor track and field team during the Captains’ Invitational at the Freeman Center Saturday. The meet was hosted by Christopher Newport.
Caddle-Hope and Daniel were among six Coppin State student-athletes who also achieved Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship qualifying standards. Caddle-Hope was victorious in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. She achieved the qualifying marks in both of those races by crossing the finish line in 24.98 seconds (200) and 56.81 (400).
Daniel, a four-time MEAC indoor champion, won her signature event, the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 5.75 inches.
Also reaching MEAC championship qualifying marks were Tanaya Yarde, Danielle Baker, Randi Bohler and Alethia Edwards.
Coppin State returns to action on Fri. Jan. 9, 2015 when it competes in the Gotham Cup at the New York City Armory.

Simon and Kerr take top spots for Maryland Eastern Shore
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Attempting to follow the lead of the women’s strong start this past Tuesday, the men held their own against Mid-Atlantic competition at the men’s Navy Invite on Saturday in Annapolis, with two Hawks coming away with victories while numerous others took home top five placements. Unlike the women’s event, the men’s meet was not measured by team scoring.
As it was with the women on Tuesday, the men’s field team paced the squad, as sophomore Jared Kerr and senior Dillon Simon secured victories in their events. Kerr took top honors in the long jump with a distance of 7.29 meters, and his teammate and fellow sophomore Nicarge Arnold finished second at 7.07 meters.
Simon picked up right where he left off, winning the shot put with a throw of 18.38 meters and the weight throw with a toss of 19.30 meters. The shot put toss set a Navy Field House record, which was previously set by former Hawk Tyler Blatchley in 2012.
Other Hawks with high marks included sophomore Kevin Stanford who scored a 1.89 meter high jump in his UMES debut. Sophomore Naje Benton finished fourth in the long jump with a 6.86 meter finish, while seniors Devin Wynn and Rico Duncan brought top five placements home as well. Wynn registered a 13.51 meter triple jump to finish fifth while Duncan tossed the shot put for 14.65 meters and the weight throw for 16.20 meters, taking fourth in both events.
There were a few successes on the track end as well. Sophomore Khalil Rmidi Kinini continued his strong season, following a great cross country stretch with a fourth place finish in the 3000 meter run, finishing the distance event with an 8:16.63 time. Another sophomore, Taj Showalter debuted in second place at the 60 meter hurdle preliminaries with an 8.46 second run, good enough to earn qualifications into the finals, where he finished fourth with a time of 8.23 seconds. UMES’ relay team also finished second in the 4x400 event, wrapping the race at a speedy 3:17.52.
The meet was the last for the track & field squad until 2015, when they will play host to the UMES HS/Collegiate Invite on January 3rd.

Florida A&M competes at the Birmingham Southern Ice Breaker Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The FAMU Lady Rattler Track Team recorded 10 Top Ten finishes Saturday in the Ice Breaker Indoor Invitational hosted by Birmingham Southern College at the Cross Plex Arena.
Dr. Darlene Moore’s club finished sixth among 22 women’s teams with 51 points, sparked by second place finishes by Jasmine Smith in the 60 meter dash and Judith Kibii in the mile run.
Smith placed seventh in the 200 meter dash, Ashley Ivey finished seventh in the 60 meter dash, while Kibii was ninth in the 3000 meters, followed by Effiey Kosgei, who ran 10th.
Christina Moodie ran third in the 400 meters, followed by Raven Diggs who placed fifth, while Andrea Aaron was fifth in the shot put.
The FAMU Rattler Men’s Track team recorded 12 Top Ten finishes Saturday in the Birmingham Southern College Ice Breaker Indoor Meet at the Cross Plex Arena.
Coach Marc Small’s crew finished sixth overall with 61 points, led by Dennis Pugh, who finished first in the 60 meter hurdles, and seventh in the 400 meters.
McDaniel Olivier placed second in the 800 meters and eighth in the one mile run, while Xavier Mackey finished third in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw, and Shayne Rodney placed sixth in the 60 meter dash.
The 4x400 team placed seventh; Nickino Allwood was eighth in the triple jump, while Semasa Oni, finished ninth in the 200 meters.

Hampton opens season at CNU Holiday Open
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams opened the 2014-15 indoor campaign on Saturday at the Freeman Center, competing in the Christopher Newport Holiday Open.
The two teams combined for two event titles at the meet.
The Lady Pirates took the 4x400-meter relay, as junior Tanisha Greene, senior La’Quisha Parker, junior Ce’aira Brown, and senior Malekah Holland combined to run a 3:51.21.
Parker also finished second in the 400-meter dash with a 56.94, while Greene ran a 57.57 to come in third. Holland ran a 1:35.85 in the 600-meter run to come in second, while junior Maya Moore was fourth with a 1:36.70.
Brown ran a 5:07.49 to finish second in the mile run.
Taniya Mitchell was fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 15.65 meters (51 feet, 4.25 inches).
Senior Chidi Okezie won the men’s 400-meter dash with a 49.05.
Jasper Savoy ran a 22.27 in the 200-meter dash to come in second, while junior Trey Holloway was fourth with a 22.40.
Freshman Stanley Davis ran a 4:28.98 to come in fourth in the mile run, while freshman Eric Ellis was fifth after turning in a 4:30.25.
Senior Sulaiman Fareed was fifth in the shot put with a mark of 15.41 meters (50 feet, 6.75 inches).
The indoor season will pick up again on Jan. 5, when the Pirates and Lady Pirates head to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the UNC 5-Team Meet.
