Lady Hawks get off to a solid start at Navy Invite
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore track & field teams hoped to continue the successes of this past fall at their first meet of the winter season. On Tuesday at the U.S. Naval Academy the Lady Hawks got off to a good start with a second place showing at the Navy Invite. The team finished with a total of 24 points, only 4 ½ points shy of the first-place Lady Midshipmen.
In the dash events, freshman Dypna Umunakwe impressed in her first collegiate 200 meter dash race, placing second with a time of 25.34 seconds, good for three Hawk points. Another point came from sophomore Barbora Blahutova, who placed fourth in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:27.45. Fellow sophomore Shelasia Leitch made a strong start to her season in the 60 meter hurdles by finishing second, completing the race in 9.09 seconds. Several other Lady Hawks racers earned top ten finishes while coming short in accruing points.
While the track side gained seven points in the meet, the field side picked up the remaining 17 points with plenty of top five finishes along the way. Two Hawks, sophomores Evelyn Chappell and Shauntel Lucius, take home second and third place finishes, respectively, in the high jump. Chappell jumped 1.65 meters for second and Lucius jumped 1.6 meters to take third. Lucius also finished second in the triple jump with a stride of 11.20 meters, and senior Nancy Yao finished third in the same event with a jump of 10.73 meters.
Sophomore Alexis Dailey shined in the throwing events. The lone Lady Hawk to win an event, Dailey launched the weight throw at a distance of 15.30 meters. She was nearly as good in the shot put, taking third while throwing for a distance of 12.34 meters.
With the 24 points amassed, UMES beat out other MEAC schools such as Morgan State who finished fourth and Delaware State who finished eighth. The Lady Hawks also scored more points than in-state rivals Towson, Johns Hopkins, Mount St. Mary’s and Bowie State.
The men hoped to take the ladies’ lead with a strong showing of their own at Navy this Saturday. For the ladies, they will resume play in 2015 as they will host the UMES HS/Collegiate Invite on January 3rd.
