Green sparks Coppin State to third-place finish at Terrapin Invitational
COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- Shane Green and Coppin State head men’s track and field coach made a deal with each other prior to the start of the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland Saturday.
With little time between the long and triple jump competitions, Green took care of the first part pretty quickly. On his third effort in the long jump, he established a personal record of 23 feet, 9.5 inches to
win the event. Green soared to victory in the triple jump, finishing a strong afternoon for the Coppin State men’s indoor track and field teams. Green’s best triple jump was 48-4.75.
The Eagles were third overall as a team behind Johns Hopkins and Howard with 104 points.
While Green took care of the jumps, junior Jeremy Dorsey had some more fun with the record books by lowering the standard he set last week in the 60-meter hurdles. Dorsey ran 8.01 seconds, which shaved .1 off his mark, to win the race by a wide margin. Dorsey, who was third in the 200-meter dash, is definitely on pace to run under eight seconds before indoor season ends.
Rosen Daniel won the 400-meter race by gliding around the banked oval in an IC4A/ECAC qualifying time of 49.82. Daniel teamed with Kester Chase, Donnell Taylor and Alaric Coker to win the 4 x400-meter relay in 3:23.16.
Chase ran a season-best time of 22.63 seconds in finishing second in the 200-meter dash. Taylor was second in the 400-meter dash (50.33 seconds). Coker was fourth in the 800-meter dash (1:57.45) while
Delroy Davis finished third in the 600-meter run (1:25.62). The distance medley relay team of Davis, Michael James, Amajoyi Ihionu and Coker was third (10:57.91).
Coppin State’s Daniel soars to new heights at Terrapin Invitational
COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- There’s no telling how high Deandra Daniel will soar by the time she finishes her career at Coppin State University.
Daniel had some more fun with the Coppin State record books when she established a school record for the second straight week in the high jump. Daniel cleared 5 feet, 10.75 inches to finish third overall in
the event at the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland Saturday.
Daniel had an active afternoon as she was also third in the long jump (18-3) and sixth in the triple jump (5-4.25). Both marks were career bests for Daniel. Senior teammate had an afternoon to remember by
establishing personal best performances in winning the triple jump (38-9) and second in the long jump (18-3).
Overall, the Eagles finished seventh as a team.
Danielle Baker was sixth in the high jump (5-4.25) and the 4x400-meter relay squad of Alexis Marsh, Ashley Bacote, Kadeem Curtis, and Kesha Medas-King was fifth with a time of 4:02.70. They won their
heat of the event.
On Friday at the Great Dane Invitational at the Armory, junior Melissa Caddle was the fastest performer in the 200-meter dash as she ran 24.18 seconds. It was the fastest time by a collegiate student-athlete. Sophomore Tanaya Yarde posted season best times in the 200 (25.24) and 400 (58.64). Senior Sheena Brownell’s mark of 58.73 in the 400-meter dash was a career best effort.
Coppin State will compete in the Christopher Newport Invitational next weekend.

UMES strides to several top ten finishes at Great Dane Classic
MANHATTAN, N.Y. - For the indoor track team at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), the
competition at the Great Dane Classic was the largest field they have had to compete against all season long, and quite possibly the toughest.
That did not deter the Hawks, however, as several athletes gutted out top ten performances last Friday at The Armory.
On the men's side, freshman Jared Kerr picked up his fourth win this season, finishing first in the long jump with a distance of 7.38 meters. Another impressive finish was made by an athlete who is no stranger to strong performances, junior Dillon Simon, with his second place finish in the shot put at a distance of 18.01 meters. So far, Dillon has four wins and two second place finishes this year. Two more top ten finishes on the field end of the men's meet include a sixth place finish in the weight throw from senior George Chandler with a distance of 16 meters even, and a ninth place finish in the triple jump by junior Devin Wynn with a distance of 13.95 meters.
The men's team also took home a few top ten finishes on the track side of the competition. Freshman Khalil Rmidi Kinini finished fourth in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:30.70, adding that performance to wins in the mile run and an outstanding cross country season. Senior Aaron Chatman did not disappoint either with a fourth place finish in the 400 meter dash, earning a time of 48.41. Chatman has earned two wins this year, one in the 200 meter dash and one in the 500 meter dash.
Top ten finishes were also plentiful for the Lady Hawks, beginning with junior Gayon Evans, who ran to a sixth place finish in the 400 meter dash with her time of 56.72. Evans has two wins on the year, including a school record in the 60 meter dash at 7.34 seconds. Two Lady Hawks, sophomore Shantol Hemley and freshman Rachel Halmon registered top ten places in the 800 meter run, with Hemley finishing 8th (2:16.41) and Halmon finishing 10th (2:19.42). On the field side, graduate student Geranda
Williams placed ninth in the triple jump with her distance of 11.70 meters, just shy of the school record she holds.
Finally, the Lady Hawks earned two top ten finishes in the relay and medley portions of the meet. The UMES relay team of Evans, Hemley, Halmon and sophomore Taylor Folk (Baltimore, Md.) finished 7th in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:53.40. The UMES distance medley team of Folk, sophomores Jheniel Kelly and Jasmine Sampson, and junior Margaret Wilmot-Francis finished sixth with their time of 12:55.53.
In terms of team scoring, the women's team managed a 16th place finish with 13 points accumulated, while the men finished 5th with 41 team points. The University of Connecticut earned the most team points in the men's and women's meet.
The men's team will travel to Annapolis, Md. this Saturday for one final meet at the Naval Academy this indoor season. The women will travel to Newport News, Va. to participate in the Captain's Invite, hosted by Christopher Newport University.
