The Hampton men’s and women’s track and field teams sit at the top of the results board heading into the final day of competition in the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
On the women's side, the Lady Pirates totaled 41 points after day two's action. Coppin State finished second with 32 points followed by Maryland Eastern Shore in third with 31 points.
Coppin State senior Alexis Easterling earned the gold in the women’s heptathlon with 4,709 points while Hampton’s Shantae Boney (4,696) and teammate Shaquanda Gainey (4,439) finished in second and third, respectively.
In the women's 800m semifinal, Maryland Eastern Shore's Emilie Ducados finished with the top time of 2:08.77 to qualify for tomorrow’s final. Benita Taylor of Hampton was second with a time of 2:09.83 followed by Howard’s Joy Gilmer at third in 2:11.15.
The Lady Pirate’s Breana Norman and Casaundra Bouldin finished with times of 13.81 and 14.10 respectively in the preliminary round of 100m hurdlers. N.C. Central Anthonia Ballard took the third place spot with a time of 14.32. The women will vie for the gold tomorrow beginning at 1:40 p.m.
In the field events, Morgan State’s Ranita Mealer finished first in the shot put with a throw of 15.50m and Norfolk State’s Champagne Bell secured the top spot in the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.04m.
In men's action, the Pirates advance to day three with 37 total points. South Carolina State currently sits at second with 35 points followed by defending MEAC Norfolk State Spartans with 33.50 points.
Bethune-Cookman senior Martin Embry earned first place honors in the decathlon, for the second straight year, with 6,148 total points. B-CU teammate Keron Stoute was second with 6,108 points and Hampton’s Emmanuel Price finished third with 5,915 points.
North Carolina A&T’s Marquis Noble clinched the gold in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.18m. Howard freshman Matthew Colvin finished second (7.15m) followed by Jimel Wright, of Bethune-Cookman, with a jump of 6.96m.
Dillon Simon of Maryland Eastern Shore won the men’s shot put with a top throw of 17.24m.
In the 800m semifinal race, North Carolina A&T's Christian Harrison qualified for tomorrow's final with a time of 1:50.83. He was joined by Zavior Brown of Maryland Eastern Shore (1:51.50) and Edose Ibadin of Hampton (1:52.07) for the top three spots.
The competition concludes Saturday, with events starting at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
