Lady Bears Win 10th Annual MSU Legacy Meet
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Morgan State women’s track and field team put together one of its most successful scoring outputs in quite some time on Saturday to capture the 10th annual Morgan State Legacy Meet at Hughes Stadium.
Morgan State finished with 101 points, while 2012 champion the University of Delaware came in second with 85 points and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore scored 70 points to place third. Pittsburgh (68 points) and Robert Morris (59 points) rounded out the top five, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
The host Lady Bears finished the meet with 23 top 10 finishes, including four individual titles.
Junior Ranita Mealer, who on Friday won the javelin throw, captured the shot put title as well on Saturday with a toss of 45-07.75.
Ishakeema Swain joined Mealer as a first-place finisher, as she won the 1500 meter run in a time of 4:43.44.
Jeanelle Ovid and Monae Waller tied for second in the high jump with a height of 5-04.25 and Samantha Clay finished fifth in the discus with a distance of 131-11.
Britney Wattley placed third in the 100 meter dash in 11.73, while Teyanna Green finished fourth in a time of 11.83. Charisma Green ran a time of 12.04 to place sixth.
Teyanna Green would again place fourth, this time in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.13, while Nichole Candelaria placed fourth in the 400 meter dash in a time of 55.41. Candelaria also placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles after running a time of 1:01.58.
The Lady Bears’ relay teams were also productive. The 4X100 meter relay ‘A’ team of Britney Wattley, Teyanna Green, Charisma Green and Ekundayo Sogbesan won the event with a winning time of 45.70.
Morgan State’s 4X400 ‘A’ relay team of Tere Cooley, Teyanna Green, Britney Wattley and Sianna Wynter ran a time of 3:48.00 to place third.

Several Bethune-Cookman Athletes Earn High Marks at 89th Kansas Relays
LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats wrapped competition Saturday at the 89th Kansas Relays with 12 top-10 finishes in the major Midwestern meet, with teams from all across the nation, while B-CU was led by La’Quan Howard’s third place mark in the triple jump.
Faced with a starkly different climate than the rising temperatures of Florida in April, the Wildcats had to make some adjustments, but several athletes came through in major fashion, placing B-CU among the top tier of several events.
Among the top tier of Wildcats performing well, Howard hit a mark of 14.86m in the triple jump to place third and lead all B-CU performers at KU’s Memorial Stadium. Jimel Wright also finished 15th in the event with a mark of 13.92m.
Freshman Tristie Johnson also turned in a commanding performance in the short sprints, setting a new career mark in the 200m with a fourth place finish in the 200m, improving from her placing of fifth in the prelims. Johnson also competed well in the 100m, finishing ninth in the preliminaries with an 11.94, coming in ninth, narrowly missing the qualifying mark by .06 seconds.
On the men’s side of the sprints, Angelo Cabrera improved two places in Saturday’s final, finishing fifth with a time of 10.71. Cabrera ran a 10.67 in the preliminaries, while Darnell Washington was 10th in the prelim with a mark of 10.77.
Senior Kadian Dunkley turned in a season-best time of 11:20.39 in the 3,000m steeplechase, finishing sixth in the event.
In the throws, Desiree Richardson and Barry Kimbrough each logged an eighth-place performance in the shot put. Richardson threw 12.62m in the women’s shot, while Kimbrough hit a mark of 13.86m in the men’s shot.
Rayanna Johnson made a distance of 10.96m in the triple jump for ninth, while Deidra Jordan hit a height of 1.58m in the high jump for 15th.
The Wildcats’ relay teams each showed well in the 4 x 100m event. The men’s team of Tremayne Banks, Cabrera, Washington and Perkins earned fourth place in a time of 41.34 in the finals. The women’s squad of Shakira Garner, Johnson, Breonca Reid and Apple Harris also finished fourth, finishing with a mark of 46.31 in the finals.

Pirates Fourth, Lady Pirates Sixth at Morgan State
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University men’s track & field team finished fourth in the Morgan State Legacy Meet on Friday and Saturday, while the women’s track & field team finished sixth at Hughes Stadium.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates each won three event titles.
The Pirates finished with 54 points, while the Lady Pirates had 53 points. Maryland Baltimore County won the men’s team title and Morgan State took the women’s team championship.
Freshman Trey Holloway (Chesapeake, Va.) won the men’s 110-meter hurdles after turning in a season-best 13.94, while junior Kemal Jarso (St. Paul, Minn.) ran a season-best 9:59.83 to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Senior Bennett Taylor (Seattle, Wash.) won the decathlon with 5,744 points. Taylor won the 400-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles portions of the competition.
Sophomore Sulaiman Fareed (Richmond, Va.) came in third in the shot put with a mark of 15.93 meters (52 feet, 3.25 inches). Sophomore Javan Gray (Springfield, Ore.) was sixth with a mark of 14.38 meters (47 feet, 2.25 inches).
Senior Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.21, while junior Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) ran an 11:46.35 to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Senior Shantae Boney (District Heights, Md.) took the heptathlon with 4,691 points. She won the 200-meter dash and 800-meter run portions of the competition.
Junior Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) jumped 5.70 meters (18 feet, 8.50 inches) to finish fourth in the long jump, while junior Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) was fifth in the 200-meter dash with a 24.26.
Junior Nichelle Harris (Rahway, N.J.) was sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:52.86.

Caddle Breaks School Record at Legacy Meet
BALTIMORE -- Melissa Caddle broke her own school record in winning the 200 meters at the Legacy Track Meet at Morgan State on Saturday.
Caddle won the event in 23.75, which topped her own previous school record of 23.82 set in March at the Shamrock Invitational.
Deandra Daniel also captured a first-place finish for the Eagles as she won the high jump competition by clearing 5-6.00.
Led by Caddle and Daniel, the Eagles finished seventh in the team standings with 49 points. Morgan State won the team title with 101 points, while Delaware was second with 85 points.
Irene Cherubet, Alexis Easterling, Christina Epps and Ashley Bacote also posted top-five finishes for Coppin State.
Cherubet placed fifth overall in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 13:15.66, Easterling was second in the long jump with a mark of 19-5.25, Epps placed fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 39-9.25 and Bacote placed fourth in the heptathlon with 4,472 points.
