Bethune-Cookman Wraps Competition at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The field events athletes made several notable appearances in the upper tier, as the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats traveled to the University of Miami for the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on Saturday, earning three golds in the process, in addition to 24 top-10 marks and a handful of personal-bests and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) qualifying marks.

Leading the group early in the meet was Barry Kimbrough, who put up solid numbers in two events. Most notably, the Waukegan, Ill. native earned the top spot in the shot put, throwing a distance of 14.78m (48-06.00 ft.), the fifth-best mark in the conference this season and a career best for the first-year thrower.  Kimbrough also returned later in the events to finish fourth in the discus, logging a toss of 44.43m (145-09 ft.).

In the women’s throws, Desiree Richardson threw 13.40m (43-11.75 ft.) in the shot put to finish fourth, setting a new season mark in the event.

Stoute also turned in a solid mark of 2.03m (6-08.00 ft.) in the men’s high jump, finishing third.

La’Quan Howard finished fourth in the triple jump, hitting a distance of 14.92m (48-11.50 ft.).

Sasha Smallwood turned in a fourth place performance of 3.48m (11-05.00 ft.) in the pole vault.

First-year sophomore Junior Saint Preux topped the track event performances with a win in the 400m hurdles, running a time of 54.52 for the victory. Saint Preux also ran a time of 14.55 to finish ninth in the 110m hurdles.

Also competing in track events, Rayanna Johnson was 10th in the 100m hurdlers at 14.96.

Darnell Washington led the men’s sprinters with a fourth place mark of 21.80 in the 200m, after finishing sixth in the 100m in 10.69. Joining him in both events, Angelo Cabrera was fourth in the 100m (10.64) and sixth in the 200m (21.91).

On the women’s side of the sprints, Tristie Johnson finished sixth in the 200m (23.53) and eighth in 100m (11.66).

Rattler Track Performs Well At FSU Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida A&M men’s track team made several strides today in the Florida State Invitational meet, utilizing the event to insure qualifiers for the MEAC Outdoor Championship coming in May.  Troy Pollard stood out in the meet, winning the collegiate division of the 400m dash.  Pollard’s time of 47.12 was an-other step in the strategy of coach Wayne Angel to score points at the championship.

Dennis Pugh also had a favorable showing, finishing the 400m hurdles in second place in 53.70.  He was closely followed in fifth place by Patrick Fenderson in fifth place, in a 58.07 time.

Distance champion Elias Chesire improves in the 1500m run, finishing third in 3:57.03.  In the 800m run, three Rattlers have now qualified for the MEAC, as Isaiah Smith, La-mere Buchanon and McDaniel Olivier all hit the mark.  In the race, Smith clocked 1:51.62, Buchanon clocked 1:53.52 and Olivier in 1:53.93.

A marked improvement came in the shot put as the Rattlers finished third and fourth.  Dennis McGee (14.71m/48-03.25) and Xavier Mackey (13.98m/45-10.50) finished con-secutively for the Rattlers.

Javelin thrower Leon Jean took second place with a toss of 48.56m.

Savannah State Finishes Second In Carolina Cup

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Savannah State men’s outdoor track and field team was edged out by host school Winthrop University in the 2013 Carolina Cup, held on Irwin Belk Track in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Friday evening.

Winthrop finished first with an overall team score of 150, followed closely by Savannah State with a team score of 141. Gardner-Webb placed third with a 93, followed by The Citadel with a 57, Davidson College with a 38 and Radford University in sixth with a 15.

The Tigers won several track events, garnering seven first place finishes. In the 100 meter dash, senior Darrius Baker ran a 10.58 for first, followed by teammates Kenshard Hamilton (10.86) and Gregory Terrell (10.86) in second and third, respectively.

Baker also won the 200m dash with a time of 21.44, followed by Chazwyn Price (21.57), and Terrell (22.05) in second and third place.

Price won the 400m dash with a time of 48.83. Sophomore Cameron Hall won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.70. Teammate Lemaar Shakir finished second, running a 14.77, followed by Felton Chinn (15.01), and Randy Thomas (15.04).

Shakir won the 400m hurdles, running a 53.10. Chinn placed second in the same event with a time of 56.81. Junior Kristopher Ballou ran a 4:13.89 in the 1500 meter run, placing second.

Friday, the team of Baker, Price, Hall and Terrell ran a 40.87, placing first in the 4x100m. In the 4x400m the team of Price, Brandon Davis, Hall and Shakir ran a 3:17.75, placing first.

The Tigers were led by freshman Dolphurs Hayes in the field. Hayes placed third in the pole vault with a distance of 4.55m. Derrick Akins had a throw of 41.98 meters in the discus for a fourth place finish.

Lady Tigers Place First In Carolina Cup

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Savannah State women’s outdoor track and field team had eight first place finishes en route to capturing an overall team win in the 2013 Carolina Cup, hosted by Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Friday evening on the Irwin Belk Track.

The Lady Tigers led a four team field with a team score of 143. Winthrop placed second with a team score of 124. Gardner-Webb finished in third with a 102, followed by The Citadel with a 79.

On the track, sophomore Asia Stinson captured a first place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.83, followed by teammate Brittany Ivory in second with a time of 21.41.

In the 200m dash, Chavonta Roberts placed first with a time of 25.38, followed by Ivory in second with a time of 25.93.

Junior Jazy Seay-Blane ran a 56.77 in the 400 meter dash, finishing in first. Jaymi White topped the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.69m.

The SSU relay teams dominated both the 4x100m and the 4x400m. The team of Stinson, Aleah Hordges, Jade Bentley and White won the 4x100 with a time of 46.91. Hordges, Roberts, White, and Seay-Blane won the 4x400 with a time of 3:17.75.

In the field events, White led the Lady Tigers in the long jump with a distance of 6.07m and a first place finish. Chantia Taylor finished in second with a distance of 5.20m.

Rajeanne Jarrett won the triple jump with a distance of 11.37m, followed by Taylor in second with an 11.20. Taylor finished third in the high jump with a 1.50.

Pirates Win Two Titles at Aggie Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hampton University men’s track & field team picked up two event title at the Aggie Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T on Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track.

Sophomore Sulaiman Fareed (Richmond, Va.) won the shot put title with a mark of 16.16 meters (53 feet, 0.25 inches). Fareed also came in second in his flight of the discus throw with a mark of 38.96 meters (127 feet, 10 inches).

Junior Kemal Jarso (St. Paul, Minn.) ran a season-best 15:27.20 to win the 5,000-meter run.

The Pirates 4x400-meter relay team finished third in their section after running a season-best 40.89.

For the Lady Pirates in Greensboro, N.C., junior Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) won the 5,000-meter run with an 18:33.81. Senior Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) was second in the 1,500-meter run with a season-best 4:44.84 and fourth in Section 5 of the 400-meter dash with a 56.51.

Junior Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) came in third in the 100-meter hurdles with a 13.93 and in the high jump with a season-best mark of 1.65 meters (five feet, five inches).

Junior Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) set a season-high in the long jump with a mark of 5.90 meters (19 feet, 4.25 inches) to come in second in her flight. She also had a season-best mark of 12.29 meters (40 feet, four inches) in the triple jump.

A few Lady Pirates also competed in the Norfolk State Relays on Saturday at Dick Price Stadium. Senior Casaundra Bouldin (Bowie, Md.) was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.80.
