FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Hampton University senior Benita Taylor will compete in the 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) will compete in the 800-meter run.
Of the 16 student-athletes entered for the 800-meter run, Taylor is ranked 12th. She ran a school-record 2:05.67 in the 800-meter run this past weekend at the ECAC Indoor Championships, winning the event, after winning the MEAC title in that event last month.
Overall, Taylor is 15th in the nation in the 800-meter run.
Taylor, who is First Team All-MEAC in both the 800-meter run and 4x400-meter relay this season, is the only female student-athlete from an HBCU to be competing in the NCAA Indoor Championships, and she will look to bring the program its sixth Div. I national title.
Yvette Lewis won the program's first two NCAA titles at the Div. I level, taking the indoor triple jump crown in 2006 and the outdoor title in the same event in 2007. Francena McCorory won three NCAA titles, all in the 400-meter dash, with her last coming in the 2010 outdoor season.
Taylor earned All-America Honorable Mention last year during the outdoor season in both the 800-meter run and 4x400-meter relay, as awarded by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), after advancing past the NCAA East Preliminary in both events.
This will be Taylor's first trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
ESPN3 will stream the NCAA Indoor Championships live on Friday from 6:30-10:30 p.m. EST and on Saturday from 7-9:30 p.m. EST. A tape-delayed broadcast of the meet will air on ESPNU on Sunday, March 17 at 7 p.m. EST.
