Daniel Wins High Jump at Weems Baskin Invitational
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Coppin State's Deandra Daniel won the high jump competition at the 2013 Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina.
Daniel won the event by clearing 5-7.00, which ranks third all-time in Coppin State outdoor track and field history.
Tanaya Yarde notched a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters as she completed the race in a time of 25.52.
Senior Alexis Easterling posted top-10 finishes in the high jump and the long jump. She placed sixth in the high jump by clearing 5-3.00 and sixth in the long jump with a mark of 16-2.50.
Paula Smith finished in a tie for sixth in the high jump by clearing 5-3 and Ashley Bacote placed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 16-1.75.
Coppin State's 4x100-relay team of Yarde, Easterling, Sandra Bonga and Shena Brownell finished third in a time of 47.65, while the 4x400-relay team of Bonga, Brownell, Yarde and Bacote placed sixth overall in 3:57.38.
Green, Thomas, Victorian Win Events at Weems Baskin Invitational
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Shane Green, Andre Thomas and Jibri Victorian each won individual events highlighting Coppin State's performances at the 2013 Weems Baskin Invitational at the University of South Carolina.
Green captured the triple jump title, Thomas won the 800 meters and Victorian finished first in the 400-meter hurdles.
Green finished first in the triple jump competition by almost three feet. He posted a mark of 48-1.75, which ranks second all-time in Coppin State history.
Thomas placed first in the 800 meters in a time of 1:56.51 and Victorian captured top honors in the 400 hurdles in a time of 52.07. Thomas also notched a fifth-place finish in the 1500 meters as he completed the race in 4:04.93.
Coppin State also recorded seven other top-10 finishes during the meet.
Brandon Baskerville tied for second place in the high jump by clearing 6-4.75, while Donell Taylor placed sixth in the 400 meters in 50.47 and Kareem Crawford finished sixth in the 400 hurdles in 55.11 and Jeremy Dorsey finished 10th in the 200 meters in 22.52.
The Eagles 4x100-relay team of Dorsey, Haysean Cowie-Clarke, Crawford and Rosen Daniel finished third overall in a time of 42.71.
Coppin State's B 4x400-relay team finished fourth in a time of 3:21.32, while the A team finished sixth in 3:23.72.

Bears Shine at Weems Invitational
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Morgan State men's track & field team won a pair of events and posted 11 top-10 finishes at the annual Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina.
Aaron Covington recorded a first place finish in the 400m dash, running a 49.15 in front of teammates Evan Johnson (50.11) and Rolando Reid (50.81) who finished in 3rd and 7th place respectively.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the Bears foursome of Aaron Covington, Brandon Hairston, Evan Johnson and Rolando Reid captured first place with an IC4A qualifying time of 3:15.94. The 4x100-meter relay team comprised of Rolando Reid, Nigel Thompson, Aaron Covington and Christian Boateng finished in second place with an IC4A qualifying 42.21 behind South Carolina (41.82).
Boateng also posted a fifth place finish in the 100m dash with a 10.90.
Kenyon Wright and Jefferson Butler Ied the Bears in the field events. Wright notched a second place in the high jump with a leap of 1.95m, while Jefferson Butler's toss of 15.67m in the shot put landed him a fourth place finish.

Coles Leads NSU at Tribe Invite
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Led by a win by rookie Steve Coles in the 400 meters, the Norfolk State men's track and field team took 11 top-10 finishes on Saturday at the Tribe Invitational hosted by the College of William & Mary.
Coles clocked a time of 48.49 seconds to win the men’s 400 meters, just edging Patrick Taylor of Army by .02 (48.51). Teammate Keith Nkrumah was 10th in the same event (50.28).
NSU took five top-10 finishes in field events. Junior Robert Thrasher (6-4.25) and sophomore D’Sean Brown (6-2.25) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the high jump. Freshman Willard Ward came in eighth in the pole vault with a season-best clearance of 13-3.5. Junior Ian Copeland was ninth in the discus (137-9) and freshman Johnathan Anderson was also ninth in the shot put (44-8.25).
Elsewhere on the track, freshman Damian Smith was runner-up in the 200 meters (21.65), while the duo of Kenneth Smith (54.43) and Quentin Parker (55.18) were third and sixth, respectively, in the 400 hurdles. Jerome Scurry placed ninth in the 800 (2:00.04), Sammy Kiptoo placed 12th in the 1,500 (4:03.14) and Nathnael Meseret did likewise in the 3,000 (8:43.57).
Bell Leads Spartans at Tribe Invite
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Led by a pair of relay victories and a first-place finish from Champagne Bell in the long jump, the NSU women’s track and field team racked up 11 top-10 finishes on Saturday at the Tribe Invitational hosted by the College of William & Mary.
Bell won the long jump easily with her best jump of 19 feet, 6 inches. That was roughly a foot and a half further than her closest competitor, Nicole Dory of William & Mary (18-0.25).
Six of the top-10 finishes came from the Spartans’ field athletes. In addition to Bell’s win, Kaydianne McKenzie and Kiara Howell each had two top-10s. McKenzie was fourth in both the long jump (17-5.25) and triple jump (37-1.75), while Howell was runner-up in both the shot put (43-3.25) and discus throws (147-8). Howell’s sister, Navia Howell, also had a strong showing with her seventh-place finish in the javelin (112-1).
In track events, the Spartans won both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay races. The 4x100 team of Bell, Cunningham, Torie Cunningham and Qua’Nesha Wallace clocked a time of 46.78 seconds to edge Virginia Union (46.82) for first place. Bell, Cunningham and McKenzie capped their busy day by teaming with Ra’Shaun Combs to win the 4x400 relay in a time of 3 minutes, 51.82 seconds.
In individual track events, Wallace was third in the 100 meters (12.03 second), Cunningham placed fourth in the 400 (58.42) and Combs placed sixth in the 800 (2:18.17).

Wildcats Wrap Up Competition at FSU Relays
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Wildcats wrapped competition early at the two-day 34th annual FSU Relays, as the second day of competition was rained out following the conclusion of the high school division of the 300 meter hurdles, cutting B-CU’s performances to just one beyond the opening day. However, eight Wildcats athletes competed on Friday, turning in five top-15 performances.
Kadian Dunkley led the Wildcats at the meet with her fourth place performance in the 3,000m steeplechase, finishing in a time of 11:23.80.
Sasha Smallwood also hit her primary event, finishing sixth in the pole vault, hitting a height of 3.56m (11-08.00 ft.).
On the men’s side, Junior Saint Preux finished fifth in 110m hurdles with a time of 14.52 seconds.
Garrett Ellis was 11th in the 400m dash with a time of 49.30.
La’Quan Howard topped the Wildcats in the men’s long jump, hitting a mark of 6.40m (21-00.00 ft.), while Deidra Jordan was 17th in the women’s long jump with a distance of 5.23m (17-02.00 ft.).
B-CU’s lone Saturday competitor, Barry Kimbrough set a new personal record in the discus, finishing sixth with a mark of 46.06m (151-01 ft.).

Hampton Track Dominates Calhoun Invite At NCCU
DURHAM, N.C. –Hampton had a strong showing at the LeRoy T. Walker-Lee Calhoun Invitational, which was held on Saturday at the North Carolina Central Track & Field Facility.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates each won eight events.
Junior Teiara Denmark took home a pair of titles in the field events, winning the long jump and the triple jump. She set a season-best mark of 5.58 meters (18 feet, 3.75 inches) in the long jump, while leaping a season-best 11.24 meters (36 feet, 10.5 inches) in the triple jump.
Senior Ermesha Fair earned a tie of the high jump crown at 1.60 meters (five feet, three inches).
Junior Breana Norman won the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.28, while junior Cydney Robinson took the 800-meter run title after running a 2:15.51.
Junior Devyn Thompsonran a season-best 4:49.69 to win the 1,500-meter run.
The Lady Pirates also swept the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay titles; they took gold in the 4x100 with a 47.45, while also taking the 4x400 title after running a 3:50.79.
Freshman Trey Holloway took home yet another title in his hurdle race, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.56. Sophomore Chidi Okezie took the gold in the 200-meter dash after running a 21.65.
Sophomore Mohamed Labor-Koroma ran a 49.78 to win the 400-meter dash.
Junior Larry Ramirez and senior Xavier Fraction each took home a distance race title; Ramirez won the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 1:55.73, while Fraction ran a season-best 4:10.58 to take the 1,500-meter run.
Sophomore Sulaiman Fareed threw the shot put a season-best 15.31 meters (50 feet, 2.75 inches) to take that title, while freshman Christian Faber-Kinney won the long jump with a mark of 6.08 meters (19 feet, 11.5 inches).
The Pirates also took gold in the 4x400-meter relay, running a 3:17.62.

NCCU Wins Eight Individual Events During Walker/Calhoun Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s track and field squads combined for eight individual event victories as they hosted the 20th LeRoy T. Walker/Lee Calhoun Invitational on Saturday, March 23, in Durham, N.C.
NCCU men’s and women’s track and field teams each won four individual events.
On the men’s side, James Reese, Kevin Vincent, Phillip Barren, and Willie Calvin celebrated first place finishes. In the field, Reese won the discus throw (43.43m/142’06”) and Calvin won the high jump (2.05m/6’ 8.75”). On the track, Barren and Vincent won the 100-meter dash (10.95) and 400m hurdles (57.61), respectively.
The Lady Eagles earned victories in the 400m hurdles by Delesha Conquest (1:05.18), La’Creesha Gore in the 400m dash (56.42), Alexis Sherrill in the high jump (1.60m/5’ 3”), and Ashley McCoy in the 100m dash (11.94).
These individual victories marked the third consecutive victory for McCoy in the 100m dash and the second for Sherrill in the high jump.
The invitational is held to honor track and field legends Dr. LeRoy T. Walker and Lee Calhoun. While serving as head coach, Walker took the program to new heights. His student-athletes accounted for 30 national titles, 77 All-American certifications and eight Olympic medalists.
From 1956 to 1980, Walker’s student-athletes represented NCCU in six Olympic games. One of those six was Lee Calhoun. Under his leadership and direction, Calhoun became the first NCCU track and field athlete to win Olympic gold in the 110-meter hurdles in 1956.
