Wildcats Produce Solid Performances at Hurricane Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Wildcats wrapped up competition on Saturday at the Hurricane Invitational, on the campus of the University of Miami, coming away with 31 top-10 finishes, including a pair of first-place marks against strong southeastern competition.
The Wildcats had a particularly strong outing in the multi-events, qualifying all of the B-CU athletes in the group for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Leading the group, Keron Stoute picked up a win in the decathlon, earning 6,069 points while winning five of the events; 100m dash (11.14), long jump (6.62m/21-08.75 ft.), high jump (1.94m/6-04.25 ft.), 110m hurdles (15.91) and Javelin (47.02m/154-03 ft.). Also logging spots in the top 10, Martin Embry III was third (5,546 points), Nnamdi Davis was fourth (5,425 points) and Curtis Riggins was fifth (5,364 points).
On the women’s side of the multis, Rayanna Johnson led the pack in fourth with 4,204 points after winning the javelin with a throw of 30.30m (99-05 ft.). Joining her in the top 10, Deidra Jordan was fifth (4,124 points) and Cenita Sanders was eighth (3,540 points).
Kadian Dunkley picked up a gold in the early outdoor season, topping the field in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:45.69. On the men’s side, Ricy Brown finished in 4:06.18 for sixth place. In the middle distance, Morgan Brown crossed in 2:22.42, finishing ninth in the women’s 800m.
Taking on her most natural event, Tristie Johnson finished second in the 200m in a time of 11.60 seconds. Johnson also performed well in the 400m, running a season-best time of 55.48 to finish fourth.
In the men’s 200m, Joshua Perkins slightly edged out his entry time and next B-CU finisher Garrett Ellis with a time of 21.54 to finish fifth, ahead of Ellis’ sixth. Ellis also logged an eighth-place mark in the 400m with a time of 49.28.
Angelo Cabrera finished at 10.74 in the 100m dash for seventh place, while Keyona Thomas came in at 12.03 for eigth on the women’s side.
In the hurdles, Sasha Smallwood finished ninth in the 100m hurdles at 17.47 seconds. Smallwood also hit a mark of 3.50m (11-05.75 ft.) to come in fourth in the pole vault. In the men’s110m hurdles, Junior Saint Preux ran a 14.75 for 10th.
The Wildcats were very active at the Hurricane Invite in the field events, led by Barry Kimbrough, who threw a distance of 45.61m (149-08 ft.) in the discus to place second. Kimbrough also placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 14.14m (46-04.75 ft.).
In the women’s throws, Desiree Richardson placed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 12.75m (41-10.00 ft.) and threw 31.83m (104-05 ft.) in the discus for a fifth-place finish.
La’Quan Howard led the triple jumpers with a distance of 14.44m (47-04.50 ft.) to finish third, ahead of Jimel Wright at 13.90m (45-07.25 ft.) and sixth place. On the women’s side, Rayanna Johnson added to her heptathlon finish with a fourth-place mark of 11.45m (37-06.75 ft.).
Wright topped the B-CU long jumpers with a seventh-place distance of 6.94m (22-09.25 ft.), edging out Perkins (eighth, 6.88m/22-07.00 ft.).
The ‘Cats also put in a pair of solid sprint relays performances, led by the women’s 4x100m (composed of K.Thomas, Apple Harris, Johnson, Tristie and ShakiraGarner), which set a season best mark of 46.22 for third. The men’s 4x100m (of Cabrera, Darnell Washington, Perkins and Embry) was eighth in 43.15.
