Brown's Half-Mile Victory Leads B-CU at Armory Invitational
NEW YORK - The Wildcats had a strong showing, on the nation's biggest stage, this weekend at the Armory Collegiate Invitational, collecting four top 10 finishes, including a big win for Ricy Brown in the 800m.
The Armory meet, formerly the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, is annually one of the largest meets of the indoor season, with top-level athletes competing from 100 campuses coast to coast. Of the elite group heading up to the Big Apple, Brown definitely fared at the highest level for the Wildcats, earning the win in the half mile with a mark of 1:53.51.
Transfer Keron Stoute continued to shine in his first season with the Wildcats, hitting a height of 2.04m (6-08.25 ft.) to finish fifth in the high jump, hitting the same mark as the third place finisher. However, misses during competition came back to cost him the final ranking.
La'Quan Howard hit a mark of 14.60m (47-11.00 ft.) to finish seventh in the triple jump.
Senior distance runner Kadian Dunkley finished the 5,000m in a season-best time of 17:32.06, moving her into second in the MEAC this year and placing 10th at Armory. Dunkley also competed in the 800m, running the 25th best half-mile in the MEAC at 2:23.21, placing 63rd.
Sasha Smallwood broke her own school record in the pole vault with a height of 3.70m (12-01.50 ft.), earning 15th on the new personal record mark. Much like Stoute, only seven vaulters hit higher marks, but early, lower-height misses pushed her down the final rankings.
Josh Perkins had a season-best 21.89 in the 200m preliminary, qualifying for the next round, but was unable to compete in the final.
Freshman sprinter Tristie Johnson continues to improve with each outing, hitting a personal record of 7.52 in the 60m for an 18th place preliminary mark, missing the final based on heat finish, not time. She came back to run a 24.53 in the 200m to place 19th.
Several Wildcats made improvements in their season and career marks on the day. Freshman Breonca Reid had a personal best in the 60m with a time of 7.61 to place 31st and Darnell Washington had a season best of 6.87 in the 60m to finish 30th. Tremayne Banks and Junior Saint Preux both ran a season-best 8.09 seconds in the 60m hurdles, finishing in a four way tie. After applying the tiebreaker, Saint Preux was awarded 20th and Banks 23rd.
