The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed day one of the Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
On the women's side, Norfolk State took the lead heading into day two with 14 points. The defending MEAC indoor track and field champion Hampton Lady Pirates and Florida A&M Lady Rattlers tied for second with 13 points while Maryland Eastern shore tallied 10 points during the first day of competition.
Maryland Eastern Shore's Petra Kubesova captured the gold in the 5,000m run with a record breaking time of 17:02.49 The previous mark of 18:11.99 was set by Bethune-Cookman's Kadian Dunkley in 2012. Dunkley finished in second in this year's race with a time of 17:58.34 and Morgan State's Ishakeema Swain was third with a time of 18:06.52.
NSU's Champagne Bell won the long jump for the second straight year with a 6.00m (19-08.25 ft.). Hampton's Teiara Denmark finished in second with a 5.81m and Nakia Linson was third with a 5.79m (19-00.00 ft.) leap.
On the men's side, the reigning MEAC men's indoor track and field champion Norfolk State Spartans tallied 34 points with two events scored. North Carolina A&T is second with 14 points, followed by Florida A&M in third with 11 points.
FAMU's Elias Chesire, the 2012 MEAC Cross Country Outstanding Performer, won the 5,000m run with a time of 14:57.49. Norfolk State finished in second and third respectively with Nathnael Meseret taking home a second place finish with a time of 15:10.12 and teammate Damtew Adnew was third in 15:28.66.
In the long jump, NSU freshman Jamarian Bates captured the gold with a 7.29m (23-11.00 ft.). North Carolina Central's Joshua McClam was second with a 6.95m (22-09.75 ft.) leap and North Carolina A&T's Marquis Noble took home the bronze with a jump of 6.94m (22-09.25 ft.).
Bethune-Cookman junior Keron Stoute leads after four events in the men's heptathlon with 2,932 points. Hampton's Emmanuel Price currently sits in second with 2,679 points while Norfolk State's Marcus Finney is third with 2,662 points. The men's heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m.
The championships continue Friday, February 15, with the men's heptathlon at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate include the women's pentathlon, men's and women's high jump, and men's and women's weight throw. The student-athletes return to the track to compete in the semifinals of the men's and women's 60m hurdles, 60m dash and 400m dash. The day closes out with the men's and women's distance medleys.
The competition concludes on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the women's shot put, men's and women's pole vault, and the men's and women's triple jump. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the women's mile run. Rounding out the afternoon's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 3:25 p.m.
