First-place finishes plentiful for Hawks at Coach O Invitational
PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - In the first of two home matches this year, the Hawks Indoor Track won a variety of events at the Coach O Invitational at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The meet featured field and track events with four schools competing-Howard, Hampton, Norfolk State along with host UMES.
The Lady Hawks nearly swept the field of mid-distance events, with UMES athletes winning the 500 meter and 800 meter runs. Sophomore Shantol Hemley captured first in the 500 meter race with a time of 1:14.90, and Freshman Rachel Halmon won the 800 meter with a time of 2:22.94.
Junior Annis Mars placed third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.41 seconds, while sophomore Jheniel Kelly finished right behind Halmon in the 800 meter with a time of 2:23.94. Aside from the mid-distance races, junior Gayon Evans won the 60 meter dash finals with a time of 7.34 seconds, and freshman Evelyn Chappell won the high jump with a distance of 1.65 meters.
While the Lady Hawks had wins in plenty of events, the men's side registered wins in mid-distance, distance, relays, and field events. In the mid-distance races, junior Hakeem Harris took second in the 200 meter with a time of 22.27 seconds, and senior Aaron Chatman won the 500 meter run with a time of 1:05.81. Freshman Khalil Rmidi Kinini took the mile race with a time of 4:32.20 in the distance events.
In the field events, freshman Jared Kerr won the long jump at 7.44 meters and junior Devin Wynn won the triple jump with a distance of 14.05 meters. Juniors Dillon Simon and Rico Duncan placed first and second, respectively, in the shot put and weight throw events. Simon posted a distance of 17.72 meters in the shot put and 16.71 meters in the weight throw, while Duncan posted distances on 13.55 meters in the shot put and 15.69 meters in the weight throw. The men's teams also placed first and second in the 4x400 meter relay with times of 3:57.13 for first and 3:58.04 for second.
The Hawks will conclude its home season for Indoor Track on January 4th for the UMES HS/College Invite at the Hytche Center, which is also their next scheduled meet.

Stewart, Griggs lead Bears at Navy Invitational
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Emmanuel Stewart and Ricardo Griggs led the Morgan State men's indoor track and field team at the season-opening Navy Invitational at Wesley A. Brown Field House on Friday. Stewart placed second place behind Navy's Zack Duncavage (18.66m) in the weight throw posting a toss of 18.12m.
Griggs recorded a second place finish in the 60m dash. The freshman crossed the tape in a time of 6.90, narrowly behind Navy's Jordan Sartor-Francis. Nigel Thompson placed fourth (6.97) for the Bears.
The 8-team Navy Invitational was a non-team scored meet.
Morgan State senior Jefferson Butler tied for third place in the shot put with a throw of 50-10.75 (15.51m), while teammates Rana Isahq (14.47m) and Keith Davis (14.07m) placed seventh and eighth respectively.
The Bears 4x400m relay placed sixth with a time of 3:21.61. Freshman Ahmad Abram ran the opening leg, followed by junior Brandon Hairston, freshman Olimide Akinbinu and sophomore Rolando Reid.
Joel Roberson posted a top-10 time by taking ninth place in the 400m dash when he clocked in at 49.73. Evan Johnson recorded a 13th place finish at 50.35, while Olumide Akinbinu finished 14th (50.44) and Ahmad Abram placed 16th (50.93).
Brandon Hairston and Rolando Reid led the Bears in the 200 meter dash. Reid posted a sixth-place finish with a time of 22.73, and Reid placed eighth by crossing the line at 22.73.
Lenier Tucker finished ninth for the Bears in the 1,500m run at 4:11.30.
Justin Wall placed fifth in the 60m hurdles at 8.81.
Freshman Haneef Hardy placed 13th in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.61. Teammates Onyx Johnson and Nicolas Smith placed 16th (2:00.47) and 21st (2:05.74) respectively.
Freshman Christopher Simon placed fourth in the long jump at 21-10.25 (6.66m). Sophomore Nigel Thompson was ninth in the long jump at 21-01.25 (6.43m) and Arlton Crawford, Jr. was 13th (19-09.75, 6.04m).
Simon also recorded a leap of 13.15m to place fifth in the triple jump.
Morgan State's season debut was highlighted by eight top-five finishes.
The other competing teams on Saturday were: Navy, American, Coppin State, Delaware State, Georgetown, Lincoln (Pa.), Mount St. Mary's and Maryland Eastern Shore.

MSU Women’s Track & Field Has Good Showing At New Year’s Invitational
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Morgan State women’s indoor track and field team took home 21 top-10 finishes at the New Year’s Invitational held at Jadwin Gym on the campus of Princeton University.
Teyanna Green captured the Lady Bears lone first-place finish, winning the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.68. Ke’von Lumb placed third in a time of 7.81, while Rowanna Watson finished fourth in a time of 7.84.
Tere Cooley (40.44) and Nichole Candelaria (40.94) went third and fourth, respectively, in the 300 meter dash, while Ishakeema Swain (5:12.41) and Nynneya Columbus (5:18.26) finished second and fourth in the mile run.
In the field events, Ranita Mealer took second in the shot put with a throw of 46-2 and Angela Bursey finished sixth with a toss of 41-3.75. Mealer also placed sixth in the weight throw (46-11), while Sharita Moore (45-7.75) finished in eighth.
Ajada Thomas finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 36-5.75 and Jermika Miller placed seventh in the long jump (17-feet-4) and eighth in the high jump (5-feet-1).
The Lady Bears’ 4X400 meter relay team of Tere Cooley, Ekundayo Sogbesan, Imani Daye and Teyanna Green ran a time of 3:52.06 to come in second.
Morgan State will be off until the 2014 New Year, when it travels to Princess Anne, Md. to compete in the UMES Invitational on Jan. 4, 2014.

Green gives Coppin the jump at Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Coppin State University men’s indoor track and field team started its season off on the right foot in the Maryland state capitol by claiming the top three places in the triple jump at the Navy Invitational Friday night.
Sophomore Shane Green, freshman Spencer Johnson and junior Kester Chase highlighted a good showing by the Eagles by holding a monopoly in the triple jump. Green soared 47 feet, 9.75 inches to win the event. Green picked up where he left off last indoor season when he finished fourth in the MEAC championships and fifth in the IC4A championships. He edged Johnson, who leaped 45-5.75, and Chase, who placed third in the event with an effort of 46-10.75.
Chase also helped the Eagles’ 4 x 400-meter relay team finish second overall with a time of 3 minutes, 15.52 seconds. He teamed with junior Rohan Stewart, sophomore Donnell Taylor and freshman Daniel Rosen as the quartet finished behind Navy in the event.
Stewart (200-meter dash) and Rosen (400) each placed fourth in their respective events. Stewart sprinted around the track in 22.24 seconds while Rosen glided around the banked oval in 49.16. Sophomore Alanc Coker was also fourth in the 800-meter dash (1:57.09).
The Eagles return to action on Sat. Jan. 4 when they compete in the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Coach O Invite in Princess Anne.

James earns first place at CNU Indoor Holiday Open
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – North Carolina Central University freshman Deandre James kicked off the indoor track & field season with a first place finish at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open on Saturday, Dec. 7 inside the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va.
James ran to victory in the men’s 800-meter dash with a time of 2 minutes and 00.75 seconds.
The Eagles posted four top-ten individual and team finishes. The NCCU men’s 4x400m relay foursome of James, Snonsio Boye-Weah, Victor Dunbar, and Carlton Edwards Jr. finished ninth with a time of 3:30.66.
Joshua McClam placed seventh in the men’s long jump at 6.85m (22’ 5.75”), while Boye-Weah placed eighth in the 200m dash with a time of 23.08 seconds. Gregory Coward finished tenth in the men’s 800m run at 2:06.65.
On the women’s side, the Lady Eagles recorded three top-five individual performances. The Lady Eagles were led by Anthonia Ballard who finished third in the women’s 60m hurdles race with a time of 8.61 seconds.
Lola Agboola and Sherhae Holloway both earned fourth place finishes. In the shot put, Agboola’s longest throw landed at 11.50m (37’ 8.75”), while Holloway leaped 1.62m (5’ 3.75”) over the bar in the women’s high jump.
Four Lady Eagles finished with top-ten performances. On the field, Alexis Sherrill and Jaszmine Bowman finished sixth in their respective events. Sherrill completed a 1.52m (4’11.75”) jump in the women’s high jump and Bowman’s longest throw landed at 11.26m (36’ 11.5”) in the shot put. In addition, Bowman finished tenth in the weight throw at 11.56m (37’ 11.25”). Amber Brooks finished in seventh place in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.47.
The NCCU indoor track & field squads will return to action on Jan. 11 as participants in the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Hampton has strong opening to track & field season
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. & NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams opened the 2013-14 indoor season this past weekend with strong showings at both the UMES Coach O Invitational and the CNU Holiday Open.
The Lady Pirates combined to win nine event titles over the weekend, while the Pirates brought home a combined four event titles.
Senior Breana Norman won the women’s 60-meter hurdles in both meets over the weekend – running an 8.68 in the finals at the UMES Coach O Invitational and turning in an 8.49 at the CNU Holiday Open. Norman's time at CNU is tied for the third-fastest time in the nation after the first weekend.
Senior Devyn Thompson ran a 10:53.50 to take the 3,000-meter run at the UMES Coach O Invitational, and senior Malekah Holland took the 400-meter dash in that meet with a 57.59.
Senior Teiara Denmark won the long jump at UMES after setting a mark of 6.09 meters (19 feet, 11.75 inches). She was also second in the triple jump at CNU with a mark of 12.00 meters (39 feet, 4.5 inches).
Sophomore Jade Loveless ran a 25.87 to win the 200-meter dash at UMES in her Hampton debut.
Sophomore Ce’aira Brown won the 600-meter run at the CNU Holiday Open, running a meet-record 1:33.47 – which is currently the fifth-fastest time in the nation. She also won the mile run at the UMES Coach O Invitational with a time of 5:20.70.
Senior Emmy Fraenk won the 400-meter dash at CNU after posting a 57.88.
Sophomore Trey Holloway won the men’s 60-meter hurdles at the UMES Coach O Invitational on Friday, running an 8.19, and he ran an 8.00 in the same event at the CNU Holiday Open to finish second on Saturday.
Holloway’s time at CNU is the sixth-fastest in the nation.
Senior Je’Von Hutchison ran a 48.99 in the 400-meter dash at UMES to take that title, and he defended his title in the 600-meter run at the CNU Holiday Open with a 1:19.91 – which is currently the fastest time in the nation in that event.
Hutchison was also on the Pirates’ 4x400-meter relay team – along with juniors Mohamed Labor-Koroma, Chidi Okezie, and Edose Ibadin – which took the gold at CNU with a time of 3:18.77.
Ibadin is also ranked eighth in the nation in the 600-meter run after running a 1:20.90 at CNU to come in second.
Both teams are off until after the New Year, when they will hold an Inter-Squad Meet at the Boo Williams SportsPlex on Jan. 8.

Rattlers 4x400 Sets Meet Mark At BSC Panther Ice Breaker
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.. -- The Florida A&M Men’s indoor track team had several top 10 finishes at the BSC Panther Ice Breaker this weekend, but it was highlighted by the team setting the meet record in the 4x100m relay on the final race of the day at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala..
The Rattlers scorched to a time of 3:16.19 to take first place and set the meet record by three seconds. The previous record of 3:19.31 was set by Southern Mississippi in 2012.
Troy Pollard, also had an exceptional meet, taking first place in the 400m dash in 47.53. Roman Skovronski took seventh place at 50.20, while Anthony Cross took 11th place in 50.86.
Isaiah Smith took first place in the 800m run, scoring in 1:56.62. McDaniel Olivier would take second place in 1:57.07.
Distance Runner Kevin Marindich took top honors in the nile run, finishing the race in 4:17.21. Geoffrey Sambu placed fourth in 4:28.21.
Dennis Pugh took second place in the 60m hurdles, mounting a time of 8:31.
The Rattlers had several other top finishes.
