MSU's Swain Wins 5000 Meter Run at Gotham Cup

MANHATTAN, N.Y. - Morgan State women's indoor track and field team competed at the NY City Gotham Cup on Friday at the New Balance Track & Field Center and placed 13 in the top-10, including nine in the top-five.

Ishakeema Swain captured the 5000 meter run in a time of 18:14.02.

Monae Waller placed third in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.97. Britney Wattley finished sixth in the 60 meter dash with a mark of 7.69 and Teyanna Green finished ninth with a mark of 7.73.

Nichole Candelaria finished with a mark of 57.01 and came in fourth in the 400 meter dash, while Ekundayo Sogbesan placed fourth in the 500 meter dash in a time of 1:13.75.

The 4X400 meter relay team of Ekundayo Sogbesan, Nichole Candelaria, Teyanna Green and Tere Cooley placed second and earned a time of 3:46.46.

In the field events, Ranita Mealer placed second in the shot put with a toss of 47-03.00, while Angela Bursey came in fifth with a throw 43-05.25.

Rookie McClam Sparks NCCU At Clemson Indoor Track & Field Challenge

CLEMSON, S.C. - Freshman Joshua McClam topped North Carolina Central with a pair of top-three finishes at the Tiger Indoor Track & Field Challenge, hosted by Clemson University on Friday. In all, NCCU's men's and women's teams combined for 11 top-five performances during the one-day meet.

McClam, a native of Holly Springs, N.C., was the runner-up in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.99 meters (22 feet, 11.25 inches), falling just shy of event winner James Abdul-Mateen of Clemson (7.06m/23-2.0). The rookie also placed third in the men's triple jump with a distance of 13.33m (43-9.0) and 11th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.98 seconds.

NCCU senior Willie Calvin recorded two third-place finishes by clearing the men's high jump bar at 2.14m (7-0.25) and landing 6.93m (22-9.0) in the long jump pit.

Lady Eagles junior Alexis Sherrill posted a personal-best mark of 1.64m (5-4.5) in the women's high jump to place third.

Also recording personal-best standards were senior Phillip Barren with a time of 6.76 seconds to place third in the 60m dash, and senior Jasmine Wanamaker with a time of 8.68 seconds in the women's 60m hurdles to place fifth behind four runners from Clemson.

Savannah State Opens Indoor Track & Field Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -Savannah State men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2013 season at the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazer Invitational  on Friday.

The men's team garnered several top ten finishes, including one in a new event for the Tigers. The Lady Tigers finished at the top in two events, and set a record in one.

Sophomore Asia Stinson set a new school record in the women's 60 meter dash with her qualifying time of 7.57 in the preliminaries. Stinson finished fifth in the event with a final of 7.59.

Also finishing in the top five for SSU was sophomore Jaymi White, who placed fifth in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.58 meter. White also competed in the women's triple jump, finishing 15th with a distance of 11.37m.

In the 200 meter, Aleah Hordges finished 18th with a time of 59.04, while Jazy Seay-Blane finished 27th with a 59.76. Chavonta Roberts competed in the 400 meter, finishing with a time of 59.82.

The relay team of Hordges, Roberts, Seay-Blane and Jade Bentley finished 11th in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:58.75.

On the men's side sophomore Cameron Hall led the Tigers with a 3rd place finish in the 60 meter hurdles. Hall posted a qualifying time of 8.41 and a finals time of 8.10.

Competing in a new event for the Tigers, Dolphrus Hayes finished 6th in the pole vault with a distance of 4.50 meters. It is the first time in SSU's NCAA Division I history (Since 2002) the team has fielded a pole vault competitor.

In the men's 60 meter dash, senior Darrius Baker finished 10th with a time of 6.93 after qualifying with a time of 6.95. Baker finished 18th in the 200m dash with a time of 22.51.

 Helming the 400m dash for the Tigers was junior Chazwyn Price who finished with a time of 50.18 for a 13th place finish. Lamaar Shaikir finished the same event with a time of 51.33, followed by newcomer Brandon Davis with a 52.28.

Running in the 5000 meter Derrick Bell finished 8th with a time of 9:42.88. Kristopher Ballou posted a time of 2:00.59 in the 800m run, followed by Llorr Robinson with a time of 2:12.60. Ballou also recorded a time of 4:42.73 in the one mile run.

The SSU relay team of Davis, Baker, Shakir, and Hall finished 13th in the 4x400m with a time of 3:26.95.

Caddle Breaks Coppin State Record in the 400 Meters 

NEW YORK -- Melissa Caddle broke the Coppin State school record in the 400 meters highlighting the Eagles performances at the 2013 New York Gotham Cup on Friday in the New York Armory.

Caddle finished third in the 400 meters in a school-record time of 54.77. The time topped the previous Coppin State record of 54.97 set by Treska Baptiste in 2003. The time also ranks as the eighth-best time in the nation.

Senior Alexis Easterling had the Eagles top finish on the day as she placed second in the long jump with a mark of 19-3.25.

The Eagles 4x400 relay team of Sandra Bonga, Camry Torian, Ronecia Nash and Kianna Martinez finished third overall in a time of 3:50.52.

Coppin State also received a fourth-place finish from Deandra Daniel and seventh-place finishes from Bonga and Ashley Bacote.

Daniel finished fourth in the high jump by clearing 5-5.00, while Bonga was seventh in the 400 meters in 58.05 and Bacote was seventh in the high jump with a mark of 5-3.00.
