Four Lady Pirates Named Track All-American Honorable Mention
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Four members of the Hampton University women's track & field team were named Honorable Mention All-American, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Tuesday.
Senior Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned Honorable Mention honors in both the 800-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay. She ran a 2:09.23 in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run, coming in eighth in her heat in the NCAA Outdoor Championships this past weekend in Des Moines, Iowa.
Joining Taylor as Honorable Mention All-Americans in the 4x400-meter relay are freshman Cassandra Jones (Norfolk, Va.), Emmy Fraenk (Hampton, Va.) and senior Claudla Calder (Kingston, Jamaica).
The Lady Pirates ran a 3:41.44 in their preliminary heat at the NCAA Championships.
Bethune-Cookman's Clarke Earns USTFCCCA All-America Recognition
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the second straight season, hurdler Kemar Clarke has earned an All-American nod, as officials from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) listed the outgoing B-CU senior as an All-American Honorable Mention on Tuesday.
Clarke also was recognized as an All-American Honorable Mention following the 2010-11 season, in which he finished 19th in the 110m hurdles at the NCAA National Championships.
To wrap up his 2011-12 season, he finished 17th in the 110m hurdles at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In his journey to the NCAA's, he logged a season and career-high time of 13.65 seconds.
With his B-CU career completed, the next step is coming up fast, as Clarke has qualified for the Jamaican Olympic Trials on June 24 in Kingston, Jamaica. He is preparing physically and finalizing the paperwork to compete in the meet.
USTFCCCA Announces All-American Recipients; Stewart Earns 2nd-Team Honors
NEW ORLEANS, La. -The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday morning announced those athletes that earned USTFCCCA All-America distinctions for the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field season.
Morgan State sophomore Emmanuel Stewart earned second-team All-America honors in the discus. The women's 4X100 meter relay team (Charisma Green, Teyanna Green, Ekundayo Sogbesan, Britney Wattley) earned honorable mention honors.
Stewart finished 15th overall in the discus last weekend at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field championships with a throw of 180-05, while the Lady Bears' 4X100 relay team, ran a time of 44.97 to finish 18th overall.
First Team USTFCCCA All-America honors are awarded to those who earn any portion of a team point at the national championships, or reach an eight-entrant final. Second Team All-America honors are handed out to those whose final placing in the national meet range from ninth to 16th place.
Those who participated at the final site, but did not place in the meet's top 16, are listed as honorable mention for the All-America award.
Student-athletes from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for All-America consideration.
In all, 189 men and 188 women earned All-America honors.
