The Hampton Lady Pirates and Norfolk State Spartans lead all competitors heading into the final day of competition in the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
On the women's side, Hampton totaled 62 points to lead after day two's action. Maryland Eastern Shore fell to second place with 36 points followed by Morgan State in third in 31.50 points.
Maryland Eastern Shore's Vanessa Henry set a meet record in the shot put with a 15.92m throw. The previous mark of 14.97m was set by Henry in 2010 and S.C. State's Shamire Rothmiller in 2009.
Hampton's Claudia Calder won the women's heptathlon with 4,748 points while teammates Shaquanda Gainey (4,623) and Ermesha Fair (4,435) finished in second and third, respectively.
In the women's 800m run, Maryland Eastern Shore's Cynthia Anais set a new meet record with a time of 2:07.97 to qualify for tomorrow's final. The previous mark of 2:08.56 was set by Coppin State's Diana Pitts in 1992.
Kadian Dunkley of B-CU won the women's 5000m run with a time of 18:33.57. Morgan State's Ishakeema Swain was second in 18:45.42 followed by Hampton's Devyn Thompson in third in 18:47.60.
In men's action, the defending MEAC Norfolk State Spartans advance to day three with a total of 56.50 points The UMES Hawks are currently second with 29 points and the South Carolina State Bulldogs rounded out the top three with 26.50 points.
Bethune-Cookman junior Martin Embry earned first place honors in the decathlon with 6,218 total points. UMES' Jermol Dix was second with 5,950 points and Bethune-Cookman's Nnamdi Davis was third with 5,876 points.
In the 800m semifinal race, North Carolina A&T's Paris Simmons qualified for tomorrow's final with a time of 1:49.18. Simmons' time set a new meet record. Damion Drummond of UMES held the previous mark of 1:49.41 in 2003.
The competition concludes Saturday, with events starting at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
