MEAC Completes Day One of Track and Field Championships

The Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks and the defending MEAC champion Norfolk State Spartans took the lead after day one's competition of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.  

On the women's side, the Lady Hawks tallied 19 points to take the lead heading into day two action. The Hampton Lady Pirates were second with 18 points while Morgan State followed in third with 17.50 points.

The Lady Pirates earned the top three spots after the first day of heptathlon. Senior Claudia Calder took the lead heading into day two with 3,040 points, while Shantae Boney (2,926) and Shaquanda Gainey (2,821) were second and third.

Morgan State's Monae Waller captured the first gold medal of the day with a 1.75m leap in the women's high jump. Hampton's Breana Norman (1.72m) and Teiara Demark (1.69m) earned silver and bronze places respectively.

On the men's side, North Carolina Central's Nealie Whitt aided the Eagles to the lead after day one action. Whitt won the discus with a 52.05m (170-09 ft.) throw. Morgan State's Emmanuel Stewart threw 50.00m (164-00), which earned a second place mark, followed by Norfolk State's Michael Mingo-Dabney (48.50m (159-01 ft.) third place toss.

Bethune-Cookman junior Martin Embry tallied 3,552 points during the first half of the decathlon. Hampton's Labor-Koroma was second with 3.435 points and Florida A&M's Jean Leon was third with 3,233 points.

The Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships continue tomorrow with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate include the men's and women's long jump, high jump and shot put. The afternoon continues with semifinals in the women's 100m hurdles and men's 110m hurdles, 400m dash, 100m dash and 800m run.  The women's and men's 5000m will close out the day beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The competition concludes Saturday at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
