Hampton On Track Has Strong Showing At Norfolk State Relays

NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams combined to win nine events at the Norfolk State Relays, held on Saturday at Dick Price Stadium on the campus of Norfolk State University.

The Lady Pirates won seven events, while the Pirates took home a pair of event titles.

Sophomore Breana Norman took the 100-meter hurdles with a 13.95, while sophomore Alaine Tate ran a season-best 4:45.87 to take the 1,500-meter run, while sophomore Nichelle Harris ran a season-best 11:47.80 to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Senior Benita Taylor ran a 56.75 to win the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Teiara jumped a season-best 12.11 meters to take the triple jump, while junior Shantae Boney.) took the high jump at 1.65 meters.

Norman teamed with junior Cearha Miller sophomore Emmy Fraenk and freshman Cassandra Jones ran a 47.61 to win the 4x100-meter relay.

Freshman Brien Berry took home the men’s 100-meter dash title, running a 10.36.

The Pirates also won the men’s 4x400-meter relay, as sophomore Je’Von Hutchison, freshman Chidi Okezie, freshman Mohamed Labor-Koroma and freshman Edose Ibadin ran a 3:12.85.

Senior Devan Clark tossed the discus a season-best and school-record 46.76 meters to finish second, while Ibadin ran a 49.25 to finish third in the 400-meter dash. Junior Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished third in the 800-meter run with a 1:53.07.

Freshman Javan Gray (Springfield, Ore.) threw the shot put a season-best 14.00 meters to finish fourth.

Former Lady Pirate Francena McCorory, a three-time NCAA champion in the 400-meter dash, won the women’s 200-meter dash with a 23.25. She also combined with former Lady Pirate Racquel Vassell to take gold in the 4x400-meter relay, clocking in at 3:40.94.

Tigers Take Top Honors in Carolina Cup

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Savannah State women’s outdoor track and field team finished second overall in Carolina’s University Cup in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Friday evening with six first place finishes and one record breaking second place finish, while the men’s team captured a fifth place overall finish.

In the track events senior Amara Jones captured first place in 200m dash with a time of 23.83. Jazy Seay-Blane took first in the 400m with a time of 56.15, while the team of Chavonta Roberts, Seay-Blane, Jones, and Indiah Bell finished first in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:49.02.

In the 4x100 relay, the Lady Tigers team of Asia Stinson, Jones, Jade Bentley and Chavonta Roberts again broke the school record with a time of 46.22, finishing second overall.

In women’s field events, Alisha Nelson captured first place in the high jump event with a distance of 1.70m.

In the long jump, White grabbed first with a distance of 5.53m, followed by Hughes with a distance of 5.41m and Taylor in third with a distance of 5.40m. Kimberly Wilson captured fifth with a mark of 5.32m.

The Lady Tigers took the three top finishes in the triple jump event. Hughes finished first with a mark of 12.20m, followed by Wilson with a 12.04m, Chantia with an 11.69m distance and Bell with a distance of 11.44m.

For the men’s track events, the team of Gregory Terrell, Chazwyn Prince, Cameron Hall and Eric Plump finished first in the 4x100m relay with a time of 41.17.

In the 400m hurdles, Lemaar Shakir captured a first place finish with a time of 52.88

Ruben Isreal-McBee finished captured first in the 2000m steeplechase with time of 6:17.36 followed by teammate Kristopher Ballou in third with a time of 6:42.23.

The team of Prince, Hall, Shakir and Etchien Assinzo finished second in the 4X400m relay with a time of 3:15.60. In the 200m dash Eric Plump grabbed second place with a time of 21.75

Plump finished third in the 100m dash with a time of 10.77.

Chinn garnered second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.84.

In men’s field events, Justin Taylor finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 14.65m and sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.58m.
