NCCU Wins 17 Events During L.T. Walker Track & Field Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – Thunderstorms twice delayed the running of Saturday’s LeRoy T. Walker Track & Field Invitational in Durham, N.C., but that did not slow down event host North Carolina Central University as its men’s and women’s teams combined for 17 event victories.

The Lady Eagles won seven individual events, while the Eagles were victorious in six. Both the NCCU men and women swept the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.

Celebrating individual wins for the NCCU women were sophomore Alexis Sherrill in the high jump (1.60m/5’3”), sophomore Jazmen Flagler in the triple jump (10.79m/35’5”), junior Jasmine Wanamaker in the 100m hurdles (15.00), junior Ashley McCoy in the 100m dash (11.93), freshman Amber Brooks in the 1500m run (4:55.45), sophomore Sararesa Hudson in the 400m hurdles (1:06.59), and sophomore La’Creesha Gore in the 200m dash (24.57).

Claiming victories for the NCCU men were senior Jamar Jones in the 800m run (2:13.75), senior Nealie Whitt in the discus throw (46.84m/153’8”), junior Nana Atakora-Bediako in the triple jump (14.26m/46’9.5”), junior LaRon Blount in the shot put (11.54m/37’10.5”), freshman Keenan Terry in the 400m hurdles (58.72), and Orolando Duffus in the high jump (1.94m/6’4.25”).

Hornets Open 2012 Outdoor Season With 14 First Place Finishes

WEST CHESTER, Pa.– The Delaware State University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams opened the 2012 season with a bang, recording 14 first place finishes at the West Chester Golden Ram Collegiate Invitational.

The Hornets told home the gold in both the men’s and women’s 4x100 meter relay.

On the women’s side, DSU recorded a score of 49.34 with seniors Tracey Fan Fan and Ayanna Kelley, sophomore Vernetta Biggs and senior Krystina Muhammad  to take first. 

For the men, the first place squad of junior Tyquan Brown, senior Tariq Devore, junior Edward Hurley and freshman Alpha Mansaray recorded a time of 42.29. 

Devore led the pack with his first place finish time of 48.51 in the 400m while Junior Kevaughn Laviea and junior Stephen Bowe finished second and third, respectively.

Senior Donte’ Holmes ran a 4:04.27 for first in the 1500m run.

In the field events, Smith finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 14.10m while Armstrong was second with a 14.02m.

Junior Quintin Fortes threw a distance of 49.14m in the discus and sophomore Marko Kano threw a 54.38m in the javelin for first place in their respective events.

On the women’s side, Muhammad earned two more gold medals in the long jump and triple jump.  In the long jump, she posted a distance of 5.52m while she recorded an 11.36m in the triple jump.

Johnson recorded a height of 1.50m in the high jump for gold medal honors.

In the shot put, sophomore Maria Gwengi finished first with a throw of 12.59m.

Fan Fan also took home two more gold posting a time of 14.78 in the 100m hurdles and a time of 1:04.43 in the 400m hurdles. Sophomore Ketsia Dornevil finished first in the 800m with a time of 2:26.83.

Lady Pirates Have a Strong Showing At Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Hampton University women’s track & field team had a strong showing at the Tribe Invitational hosted by the College of William & Mary at Zable Stadium on Friday and Saturday, winning five events.


Sophomore Teiara Denmark swept the jumping events over the weekend, winning both the long jump and the triple jump. Her mark of 5.63 meters in the long jump was an outdoor season best, and Denmark added a jump of 12.00 meters in the triple jump.

Sophomore Cydney Robinson won the 400-meter dash with a 56.20, and senior Claudia Calder ran a 1:022.00 to win the 400-meter hurdles.

The Lady Pirates also took gold in the 4x100-meter relay, as junior Cearha Miller, sophomore Breana Norman, sophomore Emmy Fraenk and freshman Cassandra Jones teamed to run a 46.45.

Sophomore Devyn Thompson ran a 2:17.96 in the 800-meter run to come in second, while sophomore Nichelle Harris came in fourth with a 2:22.80.

Gainey also finished fourth in the javelin throw with a mark of 25.43 meters.

Sophomore Malekah Holland ran a 56.44 to finish third in the 400-meter dash, while senior Benita Taylor came in fourth with a time of 56.61.
