MEAC Completes Day Two At Indoor Track And Field Championships

 

The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Indoor Track and Field champion Hampton Lady Pirates and the reigning MEAC Men's Indoor Champion Norfolk State Spartans lead all competitors heading into the final day of the 2012 MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

On the women's side, Hampton totaled 68.50 points during the second day of competition to take the lead with 84.50 points. Maryland Eastern Shore moved into second place with 46 points, while Florida A&M is third with 35 points.

Maryland Eastern Shore's Cynthia Anais captured the gold in the 800m run setting a new meet record in 2:08.37. Anais set the previous mark of 2:10.47 a year ago. Hampton's Alaine Tate (2:09.93) and Florida A&M's Ariel Allen (2:10.72) rounded out the top three in the women's 800m race.

Lady Pirate Claudia Calder won the pentathlon with a record breaking 3,636 total points. Calder placed first in the high jump and the 800m race to aid in her victory. The previous mark was set in 2009 by South Carolina's Tempest Vance (3,630).  Teammate Ermesha Fair finished second totaling 3,506 points while Coppin State's Alexis Easterling earned third place honors with 3,407 total points.


In men's side, the Norfolk State Spartans scored 31.50 points for a total of 67.50 points during today's competition to extend their lead. The UMES Hawks are second with 42.50 points and the South Carolina State Bulldogs rounded out the top three with 27 points.

UMES' Jermol Dixon earned first place honors in the heptathlon with 4,555 total points. He won the 60m hurdles, long jump and shot put events en route to the individual title. Bethune-Cookman's Nnamdi Davis was second with 4,428 points and South Carolina State's Lorenzo Johnson completed the top three finishers with 4,315 points.

In the 800m race, Zavior Brown of Maryland Eastern Shore won the 800m run with a time of 1:54.89. South Carolina State's Seymour Walter finished in second 1:54.31 and Coppin State's Andre Thomas was third with 1:54.33.

The competition concludes on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. with the men's and women's shot put and pole vault, and the men's and women's triple jump. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the men's and women's mile run.  Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 3:40 p.m.
