MSU Lady Bears Open Season With Six First-Place Finishes At Navy Invite

The Morgan State women's indoor track and field team opened the 2012-13 season on Thursday with a terrific showing in their opening meet, as they competed in the Navy Lid Lifter at the Wesley A. Brown Field House on the campus of the Naval Academy.

The Lady Bears had six individuals take first place and as a team, Morgan State finished the dual scoring meet with a 6-1 mark. Morgan State's lone loss was to host Navy (81.50-73.50), which went 7-0.

The Lady Bears took the top three spots in the 60 meter dash with Teyanna Green leading the way with a winning time of 7.68, which was also one of four ECAC qualifying times for Morgan State on the evening. Charisma Green came in second with a time of 7.91, while Britney Wattley also ran a time of 7.91 and was third.

Ekundayo Sogbesan captured first in the 400 meter dash, while breaking her own Wesley A. Brown Field House record she set two years ago. Sogbesan finished in a time of 55.92 on Thursday, bettering her previous record of 56.80 she set on Dec. 1, 2010.

Sogbesan also finished in second in the 200 meter dash, running a time of 24.98. Teyanna Green (25.10) and sister Charisma Green (25.63) placed third and fourth respectively, while Wattley finished fifth in a time of 25.94.

Monae Waller captured the 60 meter hurdles event in a time of 9.10 and was tied for second in the high jump with a jump of 1.70m. Waller's jump tied a field house record.

Ajada Thomas claimed first in the triple jump with a leap of 11.72m, while Ranita Mealer placed first in the shot put with a throw of 14.28m. Angela Bursey took second in the shot with a toss of 13.35m.
