Coppin State Opens Indoor Season at Navy Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Sophomore Jeremy Dorsey won the 200 meters and placed second in the 60-meter hurdles as the Coppin State men's indoor track and field team opened its 2012-13 season at the Navy Invitational on Saturday at the Wesley Brown Field House.

Dorsey finished first in the 200 meters in a time of 22.20, and then posted the second-best time in school history in the 60-meter hurdles, 8.19, to finish second in the event. The 8.19 is second in CSU history to only the 8.13 performance turned in by Kareem Crawford during last year's indoor season.

Both of Dorsey's times qualify him for the IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships later this year.

Brandon Baskerville also captured first place for the Eagles as he won the high jump competition with a jump of 6-8.25, while teammate Julian Coiner was third with a jump of 6-2.25.

Coppin State recorded nine top-10 finishes on the day led by Dorsey's two.

Andre Thomas was third in the 800 meters in a time of 1:53.82, which met the IC4A qualifying standard.

Jibri Victorian finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.32, was eighth in the open 200 meters in 22.55 and ran the anchor leg on the Eagles 4x400 relay team which placed fourth in a time of 3:24.06.

Michael McCoy earned an eighth-place finish in the 800 meters as he completed the race in 1:58.60.

Hampton Men's Track Has Strong Opening At Navy Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -Hampton University men's track & field team had a strong opening to the 2012-13 indoor season on Saturday at the Navy Invitational held at the Wesley A. Brown Field House.

The Pirates combined to win three event titles.

Sophomore Edose Ibadin took the 800-meter run title after running a 1:52.96, which also qualified him for the IC4A Indoor Championships - which will be held in March in Boston, Mass. He was also on the 4x400-meter relay team that came in second with a 3:20.30.

Also on that relay squad were junior Je'Von Hutchison, freshman Trey Holloway, and sophomore Chidi Okezie .

Hutchison also qualified for the IC4As in the 800-meter run with a 1:53.69, coming in second.

Sophomore Corrin Harris won the high jump title with a mark of 6.95 meters (22 feet, 9.75 inches).

The Pirates also took gold in the 4x800-meter relay, as senior Jaleel Rogers, junior Larry Ramirez, sophomore Evan Williams and senior Xavier Fraction combined to run a 7:58.43.

Holloway finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.18, qualifying for the IC4As in the process. He also ran an 8.14 in winning his preliminary heat.

Okezie ran a 49.22 in the 400-meter dash to finish second.

Sophomore Javan Gray threw the shot put 14.80 meters (48 feet, 6.75 inches) to come in second.

Emmanuel Stewart leads MSU Indoor Track & Field at Navy Invitational

 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior Emmanuel Stewart led the Morgan State men's indoor track and field team at the season-opening Navy Invitational at Wesley A. Brown Field House on Saturday. Stewart beat out Navy's Zack Duncavage (61-0¾ ) to win the weight throw posting a school record and IC4A-qualifying toss of 61-4¼ (18.70m).

The 13-team Navy Invitational was a non-team scored meet.

Morgan State junior Jefferson Butler tied for second place in the shot put with a throw of 48-6¾  (14.80m), while teammates Stewart (13.66m) and freshman Keith Davis (13.27m) placed eighth and 10th respectively.

The Bears 4x400m relay placed fourth with a time of 3:22.06. Sophomore Aaron Covington ran the opening leg, followed by freshman Rolando Reid, senior Wesley Redfearn and sophomore Brandon Hairston.

Covington posted a top-10 time by taking sixth place in the 400m dash when he clocked in at 49.64. Reid recorded a 16th place finish at 50.72, while Redfearn finished 16th (50.72) and sophomore Brandon Hairston placed 19th (51.24).

Reid and Covington led the Bears in the 200 meter dash. Reid posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 22.51, and Convington placed sixth by crossing the line at 22.51. Hairston took 10th place at 22.81 and sophomore Aaron Strums finished 16th at 23.32.

Freshman Nigel Thompson completed the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.17 to place seventh.

Senior Christian Smooth placed 20th in the 3,000m run at 9:00.40, followed by William Campbell at 25th place with a time of 9:24.36.

Nicolas Smith finished 22nd for the Bears in the 1,500m run at 4:29.60. Junior Kennedy Ikwubuo took 24th place at 5:10.65.

Aaron Strums placed fifth in the 60m hurdles at 8.33.

Coppin State Opens Track Season at Bow-Tie Classic

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Freshman Melissa Caddle won the 200 meters and also ran the the third leg on Coppin State's victorious 4x400-meter relay team leading the Eagles to a second-place finish at the Bow-Tie Track Classic in the indoor track season opener.

Caddle captured the 200 meters in a time of 25.11 and then ran the third leg on the 4x400 relay team that captured first place in a time of 4:03.52.

Led by Caddle, Coppin State finished second in the team standings with 78.50 points. The host Ursinus won the team title with 124.50 points.

Coppin State won four events and posted 13 top-10 finishes on Saturday.

Deandra Daniels won the high jump by clearing 5-5.75, which ranks as the second-best jump in Coppin State indoor track history.

Paula Smith won the long jump in her first meet in a Coppin State uniform. She jumped 18-00.25 to win the event.

Javonna Dickerson, who also ran the lead leg on the 4x400 team, finished second in the open 400 meters in a time of 1:00.51, while Irene Cherubet placed second in the 5000 meters in a time of 20:15.10.

The Eagles 4x200 relay team of Shanee Smith, Nefertiti Brown, Amanda Boykins and Roneica Nash finished third overall in a time of 1:48.59.

DSU'S Carter Shines In Season-Opening Meet

Dover, Del.- Delaware State's Ryan Carter  took first place in the 400-meter dash at the 2012 Navy Invitational in the season opening meet of the Hornets' 2012-13 men's indoor track & field season in Annapolis, Md., this weekend.

Carter posted a winning time of 49.19 seconds, exceeding the IC4A championship standard (49.20 sec.) for the event.

Delaware State's Stephen Bowe was fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.45 seconds.

DSU's Alpha Mansara (was fifth in the 60 meter dash and the 200 dash. Mansara reached the 60-meter final with the fourth-best qualifying time of 7.13 seconds.  He recorded the same time in the final race. In the 200, Mansara posted a time of 22.48 seconds.

Delaware State's Terrell Oliver took sixth place in the 800-meter run with a time 1:51.60.
In the field events, Amir Armstrong had the best showing for the Hornets, recording a third place finish in the triple jump with a top leap of 13.80 meters (45-03.50).

DSU's Christopher Williams was sixth in the triple jump (13.39 m).

FAMU Women's Indoor Performs Well At Liberty Kickoff

LYNCHBURG, VA -
The FAMU Lady Rattlers indoor track team had a productive first outing of the season, as several athletes had strong events, including a win in the 400m dash by Dynasty Jones at the Liberty Kickoff, at the Tolsma Indoor Track facility on the campus of Liberty University.

Jones, blazed to a 57.14 time in the 400m dash, qualifying her for the MEAC Indoor Championships.  She also finished second in the 200m dash at 25.33, also qualifying in that event. 

Distance runner Chandelic Jackson took first place in the collegiate division for the mile run and 800m dash.  Jackson scored the top spot by running the mile in 5:19.34 and 2:16.99 in the 800m run.

Sasha-Ann lebert showed improvement in her throwing from last season, including a personal record in the weight throw.  She scored a toss of 14.81m (48-07.25" to take third place in the event, while taking fourth in the shot put at 12.77m (41-10.75).
