NSU Men's Track Posts Six Wins At CNU Holiday Open

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Norfolk State men's track and field team got its indoor season off on solid footing with six first-place finishes and several other personal best efforts in Saturday's CNU Holiday Open. Spartans took victories in the 60, 200, 800 and 5,000-meter races, the 60 hurdles and long jump.

Junior James Taylor easily won the 60 meters in a time of 6.79 seconds and senior Keith Nkrumah notched a comfortable win in the 60 hurdles, finishing in 7.88 seconds. In the distance races, junior Damtew Adnew cruised to a win in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 15 minutes, 35.73 seconds. Teammate Kipchirchir Kiptoo was third overall and was the second collegiate finisher in the same event (15:44.89).

NSU's newcomers also performed well in their first meet as Spartans. Freshman Damian Smith clocked a time of 22.10 seconds to take the 200 meters, transfer Aaron Dudley won the 800 in a time of 1:57.52, and freshman Jamarian Bates took the long jump title with a top leap of 23 feet, 5.25 inches.

McKenzie, Howell Take Event Titles As Women's Track Opens Indoor Season

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sophomore Kaydianne McKenzie set a new indoor PR in winning the triple jump and freshman Kiara Howell easily won the shot put in her first meet as a Spartan to highlight NSU's first indoor meet of the season, the CNU Holiday Open on Saturday.

McKenzie's best jump was 38 feet, 4 inches, more than two feet further than her closest competitor and roughly a foot and a half better than her best performance last season. McKenzie also ran a leg on the Spartans' 4x400 relay team that placed fourth in 3 minutes, 58.17 seconds.

Howell, one of the Spartans' top recruits, made a splash in her debut by taking the shot put title. Her best throw was 46-1.50. Her twin sister Navia was sixth in the same event with a top effort of 37-3.75.

Elsewhere in the field events, sophomore Tiara Davis established a new PR in the pole vault. Davis cleared 10 feet, 6 inches to earn a sixth-place finish.

Lady Pirates Win Three Titles At CNU Holiday Open

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams competed in the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open on Saturday at the Freeman Center, with the Lady Pirates winning three events in their 2012-13 debut.

Senior Benita Taylor took the 600-meter run after turning in a 1:33.66, setting a new Freeman Center record in the event that once belonged to teammate and junior Cydney Robinson.

Senior Shantae Boney ran a 2:15.92 to win the 800-meter run.

Junior Breana Norman turned in an 8.56 to take the gold in the 60-meter hurdles. She also ran a 7.48 to finish second in the 60-meter dash.

On the men's side, junior Je'Von Hutchison brought home the Pirates' lone event title by winning the 600-meter run with a time of 1:20.22. He was also on the 4x400-meter relay team that came in second with a 3:20.79.

Freshman Trey Holloway, sophomore Edose Ibadin, and sophomore Chidi Okezie were also on that relay squad.

NCCU'S McCoy, Calvin Win Events At CNU Indoor Holiday Open

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - North Carolina Central University seniors Ashley McCoy and Willie Calvin kicked off the indoor track & field season with event victories at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open on Saturday, Dec. 8 inside the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va.

McCoy ran to victory in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 25.11 seconds, beating out runner-up Mary Allen of Richmond by less than a half-second (25.46). McCoy also ran in the women's 60m dash, placing 10th with a time of 7.66.

Calvin won the men's high jump by leaping over the bar set at 2.15 meters (7' 0.5") on his third and final attempt. The reigning MEAC indoor high jump champion was the only competitor in the 27-man field to clear seven feet.

In all, NCCU posted 10 top-five individual performances, with five by the Lady Eagles and five by the Eagles. The NCCU men's 4x400m relay squad, consisting of Greg Roper, Phillip Barren, Jaye Pratt and Brandon Addison, earned a spot in the top five by placing fifth with a time of 3:24.43.

Caddle Breaks School Record in 60-Meter Dash

PRINCETON, N.J. - Melissa Caddle broke the Coppin State school record in the 60-meter dash and also ran the anchor leg on the Eagles victorious 4x400-meter relay team leading CSU at the Princeton New Year's Invitational on Sunday in Jadwin Gymnasium.

Caddle broke a school record that had stood for 13 years on Sunday. She posted a time of 7.53 in the 60 meters to win the event and top the record previously held by Lisa Taylor, who ran a 7.69 on Feb. 7, 1999.

Caddle later came back to anchor the Eagles victorious 4x400-meter relay team. The team of Sandra Bonga, Tanaya Yarde, Alexis Easterling and Caddle finished first in a time of 3:49.96.

Eastlering also had a strong day for Coppin State as she won the long jump in addition to participating on the 4x400 team. She posted a jump of 19-6.25, which is a personal record for the senior and ranks second all-time in Coppin State indoor history.
