Lady Pirates Finish Second In Terrapin
Invitational
LANDOVER, Md. – The
Hampton University women’s track & field team came in second overall at the
Terrapin Indoor Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland on Saturday
at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex.
The Lady Pirates finished with 120.5 points, while host
Maryland took the team title with 144 points.
Hampton took home four event titles in the process, with
sophomore Emmy Fraenk taking the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.37, while
sophomore Cydney Robinson won the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.75.
Sophomore Alaine Tate won the 600-meter run with a
1:33.54. Tate and Robinson also teamed up with senior Claudia Calder and
Malekah Holland to take gold in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:51.50.
Calder came in second in the 400-meter dash with a 58.76
and fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.67 meters. Sophomore Nichelle
Harris ran a 5:16.82 to finish fifth in the mile run, while sophomore Teiara
Denmark was fifth in the long jump at 5.58 meters.

Whit
Leads NCCU At Indoor Track And Field Captain’s Invitational
NEWPORT
NEWS, Va.– North Carolina Central University senior Nealie Whitt
finished in first place during the men’s shot put at the Christopher Newport
Captain’s Invitational this weekend, Jan. 20-21. Whitt led 13 other top-five
performances by the NCCU men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams at
the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va.
Whitt, who also finished in fourth place during the men’s
weight throw with a 13.66 meter (44 feet, 9.75 inches) toss, earned his first
place honors during the men’s shot put with a 14.87m (48-9.5) throw.
The NCCU men celebrated five additional top-five finishes
during the weekend’s meet. Greg Roper and Nana Atakora-Bediako both finished in
second place during their respective events. Roper completed the men’s 200m
dash with a time of 22.15, while Atakora-Bediako finished the men’s triple jump
with a 15.44m (50-08) leap.
On the women’s side, the Lady Eagles posted six top-five
performances. Both of the Lady Eagles 4x400m relay teams finished with top-five
honors.
Anthonia Ballard finished in third place during the
women’s 60m hurdles (8.78), Amber Brooks finished in fourth during the women’s
1 mile (5:19.39) as well as the women’s distance medley relay team consisting
of Dreanna Wallace, Long, Taisha Parkins and Brooks (13:11.22), and Houston
finished in fifth place during the women’s 400m dash (59.10).

Nkrumah,
Tessema Victorious For NSU Men At Hokie Invitational
BLACKSBURG,
Va.
– Keith Nkrumah ran a personal-best time in winning the 60-meter hurdles and
Josef Tessema was also victorious in the 1,000 meters to lead the Spartan men’s
track team over the weekend at the Hokie Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech.
Nkrumah clocked a time of 7.84 seconds in the finals to
take the win in his first competition of the indoor season on Friday. Tessema,
running the 1,000 for the first time this season, posted a time of 2:27.56 to
win the gold on Saturday.
James Taylor ran the team’s fastest 200-meter time this
season, clocking a 21.62 to finish fifth on Saturday. Taylor also finished
second in the 60 meters, running a time of 6.78 seconds in Friday’s final.
Fellow sprinter Sean Holston, running his first indoor 400 for NSU this season,
placed third overall and was the top collegiate finisher with a time of 47.66
seconds.
In other distance races, Tessema also competed in the
mile run on Friday, running a season-best time of 4:15.79 to finish in eighth
place. Damtew Adnew also posted a season-best time, placing sixth in the 5,000
meters in 15:29.01.

Eagles Finish Second at Indoor
Terrapin Invitational
LANDOVER, Md. -- Sophomores Kareem Crawford and Brandon Baskerville led
the Coppin State men's track and field team to a second-place finish at the
2012 Indoor Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning
Complex.
Crawford broke his own school record
in the 60-meter hurdles, while Baskerville won the high jump competition.
Crawford placed seventh in the event
in a school-record time of 8.17, which topped his previous record of 8.24.
Baskerville won the high jump title
by clearing 6-10.25, which ranks as his second-best height during the indoor
season.
Led by Crawford and Baskerville, the
Eagles posted a second-place finish in the event which marks the highest ever
in head coach Carl Hicks tenure. Coppin State finished with 74 points and
trailed only Maryland (101 pts) in the team standings.
Coppin State received a fourth-place
showing from Rayon Lawrence in the 600 meters and its 4x400-relay team.
Lawrence finished fourth in 1:23.38, while the team of L'Zerek Chapman, Justin
Hodge, Lawrence and Andre Thomas finished fourth in 3:24.70.
