Current Norfolk State sprinter Sean Holston and former Spartan Chris Brown will participate at the IAAF World Championships beginning this weekend in Daegu, South Korea.
Holston, who has Puerto Rican ancestry in his family, will run as part of Puerto Rico's 4x100 meter relay team. The heats and final of the 4x100 relay are on Sept. 4. Holston, a five-time MEAC event champion through his first two years at NSU, is making his first-ever appearance at a world championship event. He will then return stateside to begin his third year running for the Spartans.
Brown, on the other hand, is a seasoned veteran and has been one of the world's top 400-meter runners for much of the last decade. The three-time Olympian will represent the Bahamas, his native country, in both the 400m and the 4x400 relay. Brown was fourth in the 400m at the last Olympics in 2008 in Beijing and was fifth at the last outdoor world championship in 2009. His top time this season is 44.79 seconds.
The heats of the 400m begin on Sunday, Aug. 28. The semis are on Monday, Aug. 29 and the final is on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The 4x400 relay will be contested on Sept. 1 (heats) and Sept. 2 (final).
Another former NSU collegiate All-American, Debbie Dunn, was slated to represent the USA in both the 400m and 4x400 relay. But she is recovering from a stress fracture and will not compete, instead setting her sights on next summer's Olympics in London. Dunn was the 2010 world indoor 400m champion and placed third at the USA outdoor nationals last month.
