MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Coppin State's Brandon Baskerville earned a bronze medal in the high jump while representing the United States at the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships on Sunday at the Ansin Sports Complex.
Baskerville posted a personal-best jump of 2.15m (7-00.50) to finish third overall in the high jump competition. USA teammate Maalik Reynolds won the gold medal by clearing 2.22m (7-3.25), while Ryan Ingraham of the Bahamas won the silver medal.
It marked the second time that Baskerville has topped 7-00 in competition and bettered his previous career best of 7-00.25 he set at the Armory Collegiate Challenge in February.
Baskerville opened at 2.00m (6-6.75), which he cleared on his first attempt. He also cleared 2.05m (6-8.75) and 2.10m (6-10.75) on his first attempt.
He then cleared 2.15m (7-00.50) on his third and final jump, which secured third place. He failed on all three attempts at 2.19m (7-2.25).
"He jumped really well," said Coppin State head coach Carl Hicks. "Anytime you compete in international competition and post a personal record you know you are jumping well. It says a lot about Brandon as a person that he was able to jump his best on the biggest stage."
It capped an impressive season for Baskerville as the freshman won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field high jump title and placed third at the outdoor championships. He also competed at the NCAA East Preliminary Round where he set a Coppin State outdoor school record.
