Mayers Jumps to NCAA Nationals

Bloomington, Ind. - Delaware State University's Kendra Mayers has qualified for the NCAA Division I national championship in the women's long jump. Mayers earned a trip to the nationals after a career-best leap of 6.18 meters in the NCAA East Regional at the University of Indiana.

The top 12 regional finishers receive automatic bids to the nationals, which will be held on June 8-11 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Mayers was eighth among the East Regional qualifiers.

She won the ECAC long jump championship with a top leap of 6.12 meters earlier this month.

Mayers is the first Delaware State University woman to qualify for the NCAA nationals since Tiffany Barnes (400 meter dash) in 2002.

Murray Advances to NCAA East Regional Semi-final

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Delaware Stat's Leslie Murray advanced to the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division I East Regional. Murray posted the top qualifying time of 50.23 seconds in the East Region preliminaries at the University of Indiana. His qualifying time was nearly one second ahead of the next finisher, Jermaine Lowery of Pittsburgh (51.21).

The top eight regional finishers automatically advance to the NCAA nationals June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Murray earned All-America status after finishing eighth in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Nationals as a freshman in 2009.

He will also compete in this week's East Regional as a member of Delaware State's 1600-meter relay team as well as the 200-meter dash.

SC State's Stephens Advances at NCAA Track and Field Regional

BLOOMINGTON, IN - South Carolina State's Marcus Stephens, the only Bulldog to qualify for the NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary Round this year, was among 24 participants that advanced to the semifinals in the 100 meters Thursday at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex at Indiana University.

Stephens, a junior running in Heat four, covered the course in a time of 10:53, the 17th fastest time among 48 entrants in the event. The Macon, GA junior advanced to Friday's 6:15 p.m. semifinals. The top 12 finishers on Friday will earn a trip to the NCAA Championship at Des Moines, IA June 8-11.

Stephens also is entered in the men's triple jump, which gets underway with preliminaries Saturday at 6 p.m.

Three Hawks Qualify for NCAA Quarterfinals

BLOOMINGTON, IN. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had a strong start in the preliminary round on Thursday, with three Hawks qualifying for the NCAA Quarterfinal Round.

On the women's side, Cynthia Anais had her second best run in the 800-meter run of the season to qualify for the quarterfinals after getting second in the fifth heat with a time of 2:07.31.  Her quarterfinal round is set for Friday.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Andre Walsh took first place in his heat to qualify for the next round, getting a time of 51.85 seconds.  Walsh will run in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.) will run in the 400-meter dash quarterfinals on Friday after qualifying today with a finish in 47.99 seconds.

To finish the men's track competition, Mustapha Habbani took 46th in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:13.22, finishing his season.

UMES competed in one event in the field competition, with Rico Taylor getting his second best mark in the high jump with a distance of 2.01 meters, but did not qualify for the next round.

Three Aggies Qualify For Quarterfinals

BLOOMINGTON, IN - North Carolina A&T women's track and field standout Jenea  McCammon has already had an impressive career. A year ago, she became the first Aggie to advance to the finals of a USATF event.

This season, she is looking to add NCAA Championship finalist to her list of accolades. On Thursday, McCammon qualified for the quarterfinals of the 400 meter hurdles at the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Round at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex.

McCammon finished with a time of 58.74 to place 14th and will compete again on Friday at 7 p.m. If she is able to post another qualifying time, she will advance to the semifinals of the 400 meter hurdles in Des Moines, Iowa June 8-11. There, she will have a chance to earn All-American accolades.

Two other Aggies qualified for quarterfinal events on Thursday. Krystin Lawson qualified in the women's 100 meters, and Jarrell Elliott advanced in the men's 400 meters.

Lawson finished with a time of 11.68, she will also compete in the 4x100 meter relay along with Crystal Carrington, Jessica Farr and Ruth Hunt Saturday at 6 p.m.

Elliott made his way into the quarterfinals by finishing with a time of 47.89. It was Elliott's second fastest time of the season.
