The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed day one of the Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
The Morgan State Lady Bears took the lead heading into day two with 11 points, Hampton and Maryland Eastern Shore tied with 10 points a piece, while Norfolk State and South Carolina State tallied five and three points, respectively during the day one competition.
Morgan State's Candace Shirley won the weight throw with a 17.83 (58-06.00 ft.) toss, Hampton's Kristal McGregor took home the silver with 17.50m (57-05.00 ft.) and Maryland Eastern Shore's Vanessa Henry finished in third with a 16.62m (54-06.50 ft.) throw.
On the men's side, Morgan State scored 11 points to finish first after the first day of competition. Norfolk State, the reigning MEAC champion, and Maryland Eastern Shore tied for second with eight points and South Carolina State and Hampton tied for third with six points a piece.
MSU's Emanuel Stewart won the weight throw event and broke a meet record with a 16.79m (55-01.00 ft.) throw. The previous mark of 15.97m (52-04.75 ft.) was set by former Bear Tyron Benjamin in 2010.
Maryland Eastern Shore's Marcus Brown finished in second with 14.94m (49-00.25 ft.) while Ivann Parker of Hampton was third with a 14.85m (48-08.75 ft.) mark.
The Indoor Track and Field Championships will continue on Friday with the men's heptathlon and women's shot put competition at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate include the men's and women's long jump, the men's pole vault final, and the women's high jump. The afternoon continues with the men's and women's 800m run, 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 200m dash, and 400m dash. The men's and women's distance medley relay will round out the day's events.
The final day of competition starts Saturday at 9 a.m., with the women's pole vault and conclusion of the women's pentathlon events. Early afternoon field events include the men's heptathlon, shot put, high jump and triple jump events. The men's and women's 4x400m relay will close out the events, followed by the awards ceremony.
