B-CU Has Great Start for Indoor Track at Clemson
CLEMSON, S.C. - On the track, the Wildcats got off to a promising start in the 2011-12 indoor track & field season, Saturday at the Orange and Purple Winter Classic. B-CU collected four first-place finishes and had numerous performers in the top tier at the first indoor meet of the season, along with a very large handful of personal record finishes.
B-CU notched more than ten personal records in the meet, hosted by Clemson, proving great progress in the off-season and preparation for the year.
Away on administrative business and unable to join his team in South Carolina, Head Coach Donald Cooper missed quite a showing from his squad by all accounts, and the praise heaped by opposing coaches.
The most dominating of B-CU's performances came in the 60m dash, placing five performers in the finals, with each logging a PR in the process. Taking in his first meet on the track for B-CU, Wildcat football kick returner and running back Angelo Cabrera won the event with a 6.77 second sprint.
Also in the 60m finals with Cabrera, Kemar Clarke crossed in fourth with a time of 6.86, freshman Darnell Washington was fifth with 6.87, Chris Jackson in eighth in 6.97 (6.95 in prelims), and fellow football player Martin Embry III finishing tenth in 6.99.
Clarke, who finished 19th at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hurdles, kept his progress going with a win in the 60m hurdles and PR time of 7.84. D.J. Howard finished seventh in the event at 8.25 (8.12 in prelims).
Also earning a gold through his PR, Stephon Pamilton won the 500m dash in a time of 1:03.85.
Making his first appearance on the hard track, B-CU freshman cross country top performer Ricy Brown collected a PR in the mile and a third-place finish in the process with a time of 4:32.23.
Jimel Wright finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 6.61m (21-08.25 ft.). Rob Horton came in seventh in the 300m dash (35.62), just ahead of Joshua Perkins at eighth (35.78).
Topping the women's field, MEAC Cross Country Outstanding Performer Kadian Dunkley collected her own PR, winning the mile run in a time of 5:03.12. Also in the top tier of the mile, Ileis Figueroa finished third in 5:33.64.
