The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed day one of the Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The reigning MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Champion Hampton Lady Pirates took the lead heading into day two with 16 points. Norfolk State finished in second with 15 points followed by South Carolina State in third with five points.
Hampton sophomore Claudia Calder leads the heptathlon through four events with 3,045 points. Norfolk State's Elaine Rhoades (2,865) and teammate Tanisha Jenkins (2,852) round out the top three leading into tomorrow's remaining events.
Hampton's Jahlisa Smith won the women's 5,000m with a time of 18:19.91. Norfolk State's Jennifer Chichester was second in 18:34.51, while Hampton's Jasmin Branch finished in third with a time of 18:41.03.
In men's action, the defending MEAC Champion Norfolk State Spartans lead going into tomorrow's competition with 28 points. Florida A&M posted five points to finish in second followed by Maryland Eastern Shore with four points to round out the top three positions.
Bethune-Cookman freshman Martin Embry leads the decathlon with 3,470 points halfway through the ten events. Delaware State's Darius Sivels tallied 3,308 points to finish in second while David Sandiford of Maryland Eastern Shore posted 3,249 points heading into tomorrow's final five events.
Norfolk State's swept the awards in the men's 5,000m Amos Amos Kipkosgei took home first place honors with a time of 14:58.23. Philemon Kimutai was second in 15:09.46 followed by Vincent Rono in third with a time of 15:12.29.
The competition continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the final events in the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon. Other field events for day two include the men's and women's long jump, the women's shot put, women's pole vault, men's discus and men's high jump. The afternoon continues on the track with the men's 110m hurdles and women's 100m hurdles beginning at 1:50 p.m. Other running events include the 100m, 200m, 400m and 400m hurdles.
The final day of competition starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the men's and women's triple jump. Early afternoon field events include the men's shot put, pole vault and javelin events. The championships will conclude with the men's and women's 4x400m relay races.
