Buckley Notches Second Place Finish at Penn Relays
Senior Landria Buckley notched a second-place finish in the 400m hurdles on the opening day of the Penn Relays at the historic Franklin Field.
Buckley clocked in at 59.03, which broke her previous season-best of 1:00.17 set earlier this month at the Colonial Relays.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team finished in a time of 4:01.77. The quartet consisted of Danielle Douglas, Brittany Stephens, Buckley and Jami Hardy.
4x100 And 4x200 Squads Break School Records At Penn Relays
Maryland Eastern Shore men's track and field team continued their stellar season as the 4x100 and 4x200 squads both broke school records on the second day of the 116th Penn Relay Carnival, held on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
Both squads are made up of junior Thomas Keane-Dawes, senior Allodin Fothergill, sophomore Damian Miles and sophomore Akheem Gauntlett.
The 4x100 relay finished third overall out of 87 teams competing with a time of 40.19, which broke the school record of 40.33, which was set last season by the same four sprinters. The squad will compete tomorrow at 1:25 p.m. in the 4x100 Championship of America.
The 4x200 relay was fourth overall out of 69 teams with a time of 1:23.07. The previous school record (1:24.88) was also set last season by the quartet. They next compete at
2:40 tomorrow in the 4x200 Championship of America.
The 4x400 relay also competed today and finished 22nd overall with a time of 3:11.92. Junior Paul Jones-Burden joins Keane-Dawes, Gauntlett and Fothergill in the relay. The squad races tomorrow at 5:40 p.m. in the 4x400 College Finals.
Sophomore Johan Welter participated in the lone individual event of the day for the Hawks in the 400-meter hurdles. He finished 12th out of 43 athletes with a time of 53:01.
Two relay squads also competed for the Lady Hawks in the 4x200 and the Sprint Medley Championship of America.
Freshman Jasmine Benbow, sophomore Monique Hawkins, freshman Jennell Wade and sophomore
Melina Gallas competed in the women's 4x200 relay and finished 37th overall with a time of 1:41.31.
Sophomore Cynthia and junior Eunice Jones joined Benbow and Wade in the Sprint Medley. The squad finished 22nd with a time of 4:03.44.
The women's 4x800 Championship of America will also take place Saturday at 1:55 p.m.
The Penn Relays are the largest annual track and field meet in the United States and the largest annual relay meet in the world. Over the course of three days, 17,000 athletes from all levels will race in front of 115,000 spectators.
Men's 4x200 Breaks School Record Again At Penn Relays
Three relay teams ran for Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday at the 116th Penn Relay Carnival, held on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, and 4x200 squad broke the school record for the second consecutive day.
The 4x200 relay, who ran a 1:23.07 yesterday, finished fifth today in the 4x200 Championship of America to set a new school record with a time of 1:22.97. The relay consists of junior Thomas Keane-Dawes, senior Allodin Fothergill, sophomore Damian Miles and sophomore Akheem Gauntlett.
The same quartet also competed in the 4x100 Championship of America this afternoon and placed seventh with a time of 40.53.
The 4x400 IC4A College Finals wrapped up the day for the Hawks as they also grabbed a fifth place finish with a time of 3:11.89. Junior Paul Jones-Burden joins Keane-Dawes, Gauntlett and Fothergill in the relay.
Spartan Women Compete at Penn Relays
Norfolk State women's track and field team wrapped up competition in the 2010 Penn Relays on Friday after solid performances by several Spartans.
The sprint medley team of Tierra Flowers, Wanetta Kirby, Dania Sanford and Jennifer Chichester, ran in the Championship of America section, finishing 23rd in 4:04.43.
Allyssa Pickett and Elaine Rhoades both competed in the Championship section of the 400-meter hurdles and finished in 1:03.09 and 1:03.16, respectively.
Rhoades finished 14th in the College section of the triple jump after hitting a mark of 38 feet, 4 ½ inches and Kirby was 23rd in the College section of the long jump (17-9 ¾). Kaleena Gray had throws of 126-5 in the College section of the discus and 35-2 in the College section of the shot put.
Jonee' Artis, She'Anna Mitchell and Kirby each cleared 5-6 in the College section of the high jump, while the 4x100 team was just 1.22 seconds away from qualifying for the finals of the College section. Sanford, Flowers, Ashanti Matthews and Kirby finished 27th in 46.35.
CSU's Epps Finishes Ninth in Triple Jump at Penn Relays
Freshman Christina Epps finished ninth in the triple jump at the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field.
Epps, who set the Coppin State school record last week, posted a jump of 38-11.58 to place ninth in the elite field.
In other action, the Coppin State 4x200 relay team of Alexis Easterling, Shanne Smith, Samantha Leigh and Iesha Simpson placed 38th overall in a time of 1:41.37.
Eagle Relay Teams Post Top-10 Finishes at Penn Relays
The Coppin State 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams each recorded top-10 finishes in the IC4A heats of competition at the 2010 Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field.
The 4x200 team of Jamie Wilson, Teo Bennett, Aubrey Edwards and Jibri Victorian finished fifth in the IC4A heat in a time of 1:26.76.
The Eagles 4x400 team of Wilson, Bennett, Kayon Smith and Carlinton Morgan finished ninth in the IC4A heat in a time of 3:25.47.
In the championship section, the 4x200 team of Wilson, Bennett, Morgan and Victorian placed 18th overall in 1:25.74, while the 4x400 team of Morgan, Bennett, Wilson and Smith placed 20th overall in a time of 3:11.71.
Brandon Miles placed 23rd in the long jump in the eastern section with a jump of 22-0.25, while Victorian finished 29th overall in the 400 hurdles in 54.87.
Hornets Set School Record In Penn Relays Race
Delaware State was second in the IC4A 800-meter relay with a school record performance at the Penn Relays this weekend.
The Hornet team of Edward Hurley, Ryan Carter, Tyquan Brown and Larrone Moore posted a time of 1:23.85, just behind first-place Hampton (1:25.85).
It marks the second time that the Hornets have established a school record in the 4x200-meter relay this outdoor season.
Delaware State was 14th in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 7:38.50.
