Five athletes from Maryland Eastern Shore competed in two events Thursday at the 116th Penn Relay Carnival, held on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
Sophomore Vanessa Henry was the first Hawks to compete on the day, going in the women's Shot Put. She finished 10th with a throw of 14.80 meters.
The 4x400 relay finished 39th out of 89 teams competing with a time of 3:50.61. Sophomore
Monique Hawkins, junior Eunice Jones, freshman Emilie Ducados and sophomore Cynthia Anais ran in the relay for UMES.
Friday is a full slate for the Hawks with athletes competing in six events throughout the day.
Sophomore Johan Welter was first for UMES, going at 9:00 a.m. in the 400-meter hurdles.
The men's 4x100 relay will compete at 12:35 p.m. with the 4x200 relay going at 1:50 p.m.
Members of both squads are junior Thomas Keane-Dawes, senior Allodin Fothergill , sophomore Damian Miles and sophomore Akheem Gauntlett .
At 2:10 p.m., freshman Jasmine Benbow, Hawkins, freshman Jennell Wade and sophomore Melina Gallas compete in the women's
4x200 relay.
The men's 4x400 relay follows at 4:40 p.m. before the women's Sprint Medley Championship of America races at 6:30 p.m.
Anais, Benbow, Hawkins and Jones will compete for the Lady Hawks in the medley.
The Penn Relays are the largest annual track and field meet in the United States and the largest annual relay meet in the world. Over the course of three days, 17,000 athletes from all levels will race in front of 115,000 spectators.
