Hampton?s Morris Wins Title At Friendship & Freedom Invite

Hampton senior Janean Morris won an event title to lead the women's track & field team on Saturday at the International Friendship & Freedom Games hosted by North Carolina A&T at Irwin Belk Track.

Morris ran a meet-record 2:12.55 to take the 800-meter run title, while also finishing second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:48.10 to lead a strong overall effort from the Lady Pirates' distance runners.

The 4x100-meter relay team also won a gold medal, running a 46.66.

Kenya Jones finished second in both the 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run; she ran a 2:14.17 in the former and a 4:49.01 in the latter. Jahlisa Smith came in fourth in both races, running a 2:15.71 in the 800-meter run and a 4:49.67 in the 1,500-meter run.

Jasmin Branch ran a 10:35.35 to come in second in the 3,000-meter run, with freshman Tyreka Arrington coming in third with an 11:27.06.

Claudia Calder ran a 1:01.41 to finish second in the 400-meter hurdles, with Margaret Harris coming in sixth with a 1:03.72. Petrice Richards finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a 23.85 and seventh in the 100-meter dash after running an 11.59.

Racquel Vassell finished fourth in both the 100-meter hurdles (13.95) and the long jump (5.55 meters), while Jocelyn Watkins finished fourth in both the shot put (12.25 meters) and the discus throw (37.84 meters).

Watkins also threw the javelin 26.52 meters to finish sixth.

Leah Richmond led the Lady Pirates in the 400-meter dash, running a 57.19 to finish ninth.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Thursday through Saturday, when they head to Philadelphia, Pa. for the historic Penn Relays.
