The Morgan State women's indoor track and field team opened up the season by capturing a team win at the Navy Lid-Lifter Meet on Wednesday evening, hosted by the United States Naval Academy in the Wesley Brown Field House
Led by seniors Avionne Sloan, Tanisha Kendrick and Candace Shirley, the Lady Bears won five events and placed second in six, while setting Wesley Brown Field House records and having four become ECAC qualifiers.
Kendrick and Ekundayo Sogbesan both captured their respective events and became ECAC qualifiers. Kendrick won the 200 meter dash in a time of 24.95, while Sogbesan, who captured the 400 meter dash, also set a new meet record with a time of 56.80.
Morgan State's 4X400 meter relay team of Sloan, Kamice Smalls, Sogbesan and Kendrick won the event, while setting a new facility record in a time of 3:49.29 and becoming an ECAC qualifier.
Monae Waller and Jenise Everett were also event winners on Wednesday. Waller won the high jump with a leap of 1.65m, while Everett claimed the triple jump with a jump of 11.48m. Shirley became the fourth Lady Bear to become an ECAC qualifier on the evening, following her runner-up finish in the weight throw with a toss of 16.78m.
