Hampton senior Racquel Vassell led a strong team effort for the women's track & field team on Friday and in the Maryland Eastern Shore Coach O Invitational, held at the W. P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Vassell, the reigning MEAC Athlete of the Week, won both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles races. She ran a 7.63 to take the 60-meter dash, while winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.51.
Junior Claudia Calder won the high jump with a mark of 1.70 meters, as the Lady Pirates swept the top three spots. Breana Norman jumped 1.65 meters to come in second, while Teiara Denmark came in third at 1.60 meters.
Denmark also won the long jump with a distance of 5.82 meters.
Freshman Devyn Thompson won her first collegiate event by taking the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:47.22. Senior Jasmin Branch finished second in both the mile run (5:31.40) and the 3,000-meter run (10:50.22).
Emmy Fraenk and Marressa Pinncok posted the two fastest times in the 400-meter dash as the only two athletes to clock in under a minute. Fraenk won her section with a 58.50, while Pinncok won her section with a time of 59.97.
The Lady Pirates distance medley squad finished second after running a season-best 12:27.31.
