PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After nearly a month off for the holiday break, Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's indoor track and field teams were back in action with the NYU Gotham Cup/Metropolitan Coaches Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan, N.Y.
Senior Saisha Woodward broke her own school record, set on December 11, 2009 in the Coach O Invitational, in the women's weight throw. The previous record of 15.78-meters was topped with the new throw of 16.29-meters, which was good for fourth place.
Senior Allodin Fothergill placed first out of 52 in his only event of the day, the 500-meter dash, with a time of 1:03.10. Junior Paul Jones-Burden and sophomore Johan Welter placed 17th and 33rd, respectively, with times of 1:06.31 and 1:09.14.
Twenty-one other Hawks finished in the top-10 of their respective events, while 11 others were in the top-five. Sophomore Vanessa Henry, Woodward and freshman Marcus Brown were the only UMES finishers who placed twice in the top-10.
Henry (14.27m) and Woodward (13.81m) placed second and third in the women's shot put, respectively. The same duo placed fourth (Woodward, 16.29m) and seventh (Henry, 14.51m) in the women's weight throw.
Brown finished sixth in the men's shot put with a throw of 15.45-meters and 10th in the weight throw with 14.07-meters.
The women's "A" 4x400-meter relay team finished first with a time of 3:52.18 against 18 other teams. Relay team members include freshman Kenesha Abrams, sophomore Cynthia Anais , freshman Emilie Ducados and freshman Jennell Wade. The women's "B" team finished third with a time of 4:01.79.
The Hawks next compete in the Maryland Invitational in Landover, Md. on Saturday, Jan. 16 while the Lady Hawks take on the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. on the same day.
