Hampton University senior Francena McCorory was named Female Collegian of the Year on Monday for the second straight year, pulling in her second individual honor in the past two weeks.
McCorory was named Prep Athlete of the Decade on Dec. 27 by the Daily Press because of her accomplishments while at Bethel High School in Hampton, Va. McCorory won the 400-meter dash indoor title at the NCAA Championships last season with a school- and Eastern-record 51.54, and finishing third in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last June.
The senior also won four MEAC championships last season: two indoor titles (400-meter dash, 4x400-meter relay) and two outdoor titles (200-meter dash, 400-meter dash). McCorory's efforts helped the Lady Pirates win their seventh straight MEAC indoor team title and their fourth straight MEAC outdoor championship.
In addition to the Daily Press and Eastern honors, McCorory was twice named the Southeast Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year last season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, on top of earning All-American honors in the 400-meter dash during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
McCorory and the Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Fairfax, Va. to compete in the Father Diamond Invitational, hosted by George Mason University.
