UMES? Fothergill Continues Winning Ways On The Track

 

NEW YORK, N.Y. - After breaking a 29-year-old school record in the men's 500-meter dash last week, senior Allodin Fothergill was back at it again today at the NYU Gotham Cup at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y.

Fothergill, who re-wrote the record books last week with a time of 1:03.10, improved his time by almost two seconds, with a time of 1:01.74 on Friday.  In a field of 67, Fothergill placed first while junior Johan Welter was 19th with a time of 1:06.25.

In addition to the 500, Fothergill also participated in the 4x400 relay with junior Thomas Keane-Dawes, junior Paul Jones-Burden and sophomore Akheem Gauntlett, which placed sixth out of 31 teams with a time of 3:20.41.

Freshman Marcus Brown also had another record-breaking day in the men's weight throw, where he placed fourth.  Brown, broke his previous record of 14.63-meters, set at the UMES Coach O Invitational in December, with a throw of 15.72-meters.  Brown also competed in the shot put and placed second with a throw of 15.43-meters.

In all, UMES placed within the top-five of five events including the 400-meter dash (Gauntlett, third - 47:90),

500-meter dash (Fothergill), high jump (senior James Moore (Manassas, Va.), third - J2.01m), weight throw (Brown) and shot put (Brown).

In the women's events, the Lady Hawks placed within the top-five of seven while taking first in three events.

Sophomore Cynthia Anais took first in the seeded 800-meter with a time of 2:14.91.  Junior Eunice Jones placed third with a time of 2:16.53.

The distance medley team of Anais, freshman Kenesha Abrams, freshman Emilie Ducados and freshman Jennell Wade took the gold with a time of 12:22.02 against 13 other schools.

Sophomore Vanessa Henry placed first in the seeded shot put with a throw of 14.65-meters while senior Saisha Woodward was third with a throw of 13.88-meters.  Henry also placed second in the weight throw with a distance of 15.34-meters.

The 4x400 relay team of senior Ariana Forbes , senior Kharya Brown, sophomore Monique Hawkins and Wade took fourth place overall with a time of 3:54.28.

Forbes also placed fourth out of 47 competitors in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.83.

In the unseeded mile, senior Tamica Thomas finished fourth out of 41 with a time of 5:19.45.

The Hawks next compete in the Great Dane Classic in New York, N.Y. on Friday, Jan. 22.
