Hampton University junior Francena McCorory was named on Monday as the Southeast Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
McCorory was named First Team All-MEAC in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash after taking the 200 in 23.23 and the 400 in a season-best 51.75 at the MEAC Championships on May 2. She also led the 4x100-meter relay team (45.16) and the 4x200-meter relay team (1:35.99) to titles at the season-opening Raleigh Relays, before winning the 200-meter dash at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in April in 24.09.
She won the 400-meter dash at the NCAA East Regional on May 30, running a 52.00 to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships. She will look to add a second NCAA title to her resume; McCorory won the 400-meter dash back in March at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a 51.55.
The 2009 NCAA Division Outdoor Championships will be held this Wednesday through Saturday, June 10-13, on the campus of the University of Arkansas at John McDonnell Field.
