SC State Performers Fall Short in Bid for NCAA Nationals

South Carolina State freshman Shamire Rothmiller, Saturday, had a toss of 14.53m (47-08.00) to finish 14th overall in the shot put at the NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championship at the Irwin Belk Track.

It was the top performance Saturday for SC State, which also got a 17th place showing in the triple jump by junior Jasmine Smith who had a leap of 12.30m (40-04.25), and a 22nd place  finish from freshman Noel Facey in the discus with a toss of 42.43m (139-09.75).

However, for second time in as many seasons, South Carolina State will not be represented in the NCAA National Track and Field Championship as none of the school’s seven student-athletes who participated in the May 29-30 East Regional that concluded Saturday, advanced to the NCAA Nationals, which will be hosted by Arkansas in two weeks. Only the top five in each event qualified for the Nationals.

Of comfort, however, to second-year head coach Tyree Price and his staff, is that four of the seven student-athletes SC State had participate in this year’s Regional were freshmen and all but one will be returning next year.
