Fothergill Sixth in 400 Final at NCAA Regionals

Junior Allodin Fothergill 45.98 in the men's 400-meter final in the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field East Regionals at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T Saturday.

 

Fothergill finished sixth in the race, just missing a top-five spot which would have given him an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., June 10-13. The Beijing Olympian for Jamaica still has a chance to advance to nationals, though, as student-athletes who place sixth-12th in their respective events will be pooled for an at-large qualifiers to be announced on Monday.

 

Michael Bingham of Wake Forest took the 400-meter title in a new NCAA East Regional record time of 45.05.

 

Elsewhere, the UMES men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams had solid showings on the day. Sophomore Thomas Keane-Dawes, freshman Akheem Gauntlett, sophomore Paul Jones-Burden and Fothergill were eight in 3:08.28. The Lady Hawks' squad of senior Celia Whyte, sophomore Danai Lendor, senior Merrecia James and freshman Cynthia Anais crossed in 3:41.12, good for 11th place.

 

In field events, senior Saisha Woodward was sixth in her flight of the javelin throw with a mark of 36.23 meters to finish 25th overall.

 

Freshman Vanessa Henry was 11th in her flight of the shot put to also come in 25th overall with a toss of 13.56 meters.
