Bethune-Cookman headed into the final day of the NCAA East Regional Meet, Saturday on the campus of North Carolina A&T, looking to capitalize on strong performances Friday and five final qualifications. One Wildcat topped the field and moved on to the NCAA Championships, and three other events qualified, while several had near misses on qualifying.
Opening the day for Bethune-Cookman, Ron Danielle Williams competed in the Shot Put, finishing 5th and throwing a distance of 15.31m (50-02.75 ft.) in the event finals. Although Williams did not finish in the top three at the Regional, her distance qualifies her for an appearance in the national meet.
Next up was the finals for the 4 x 100m Relay. Bethune-Cookman (with a team composed of Dante Sales, Joel Redhead, Eric Cray, and Chris Herring) made a strong bid, finishing 4th with a time of 39.70 seconds and qualifiying for the national meet next month.
Ronnie Ash faced off in Saturday’s 110m Hurdles final against extremely strong competition, namely those that he will likely face in the finals at the National Championships in Fayetteville Arkansas in mid-June. In today’s race, Ash topped the field, finishing first in a time of 13.42, defeating current NCAA leader Jason Richardson of South Carolina.
After qualifying for two finals with her performances on Friday, Dianne Munroe ran in the 100m and 200m Dash on Saturday. In the 100m Dash finals, Munroe finished 7th in a time of 11.70. Next, in the 200m Dash, she came in 6th, finishing in a time of 24.03.
Joel Redhead was the next in line for the Wildcat men, finishing 5th in the 200m Dash with a time of 20.99 seconds and making a qualification for the National Championships with his time in the both the preliminary and finals.
The Wildcats only came away with four qualifications for the National Championships, this meet ended a strong season for Bethune-Cookman, featuring many strong performances on the year. There is a great amount of potential to look forward to for a mostly youth-oriented team in the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons. However, B-CU is not done for the year, as Indoor National Hurdling Champion Ronnie Ash now takes a run at earning both crowns for this season as he, in addition to Ron Danielle Williams, Joel Redhead, and the Men's 4 x 100m Relay, head to Fayetteville, Ark. for the NCAA National Track & Field Championships, June 10-13.
