The Norfolk State women and men lead after day two of the of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
The Spartans scored 63 points through six events to take the lead after the second day of competition. Senior Victoria Faulkner led the Norfolk State women with 16 points after finishing in second in the women’s heptathlon with 4,721 points.
Coppin State’s Natoya Baird won the gold in the heptathlon with 4,956 points, while Tanisha Jenkins of Norfolk State took home third place honors with 4,563 points.
Freshman Shamire Rothmiller set a meet record in the shot put with a 14.97m (49-01.50 ft.) throw. The previous mark of 14.69m was held by Morgan State's Leitawsha Bronson in 2008.
North Carolina A&T’s Loreal Smith also recorded a meet record with a time of 13.14 in the 100m hurdles. Hampton’s Yvette Lewis set the previous time of 13.16 in 2006.
The Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks finished in second with 32 points. Hampton, the six-time defending MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Champions, is third with 28 points. South Carolina State finished in fourth with 26 points, while Coppin State rounded out the top five with 25 points heading into tomorrow’s competition.
On the men’s side, Norfolk State recorded 60.50 points to take the lead the way after day two's competition. Marlon Woods tallied 18 of the Spartans points with a win in the high jump 2.15m (7-00.50 ft.) He also had a second place showing in the long jump with a mark of 7.60m (24-11.25 ft.).
Dakari Taylor-Watson of Morgan State won the men's decathlon with 6,236 points, while Hampton's Damon Dixon finished in second with 6,143 points. Maryland Eastern Shore's Jamahl Strachan was third with 6,009 points.
Morgan State finished second behind the Spartans with 30 points. Hampton (26), Maryland Eastern Shore (25.50) and North Carolina A&T (19) completed the top five in team points during the second of competition.
The final day of competition starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the men’s and women’s triple jump. Early afternoon field events include the men’s shot put, pole vault and javelin events. The championships will conclude with the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay races. A complete schedule of events is available on www.meacsports.com.
Admission for the Outdoor Track and Field Championships is $3 for children and adults ages 12 and older. Children under 12 and college students with valid ID are admitted free. Tickets are available at the Irwin Belk Track the day of the event.
